JVC AV6100 Isn't Turning On

posted by Arrone on Feb 03, 2008

I have a 61" JVC AV6100 flat screen TV. It's around 5-6 years old. It was working fine a while ago, then it shut off automatically. I thought it was a timer, but the timer wasn't in effect. When I tried turning it back on, nothing would appear on the screen, however the green light showing power is on though. And there is this humming noise in the back, from what I think is this large yellow cylindrical thing. Once I find my camera I can take a pic of it and put it up on photobucket.

So I let it rest for a while, turned it on and it was working fine. About 10 minutes later it turned off again. I opened up the back and whenever it's on, the screen is blank still and the power light is on. In the back, there's a noise that I think is coming from this big yellow cylindrical thing. Not sure what it is or what it does, but I think it's the source of the noise and problem.

Now, what I'm reading around places is that it might be a capacitor. But I'm not sure and don't know much.

For some odd reason...it's working perfectly fine now. It hasn't shut off or anything for 3 days. When I first opened up the back, it was really hot and there was TONS of dust, so I dusted everything out and air blew everything. It might've been just that.

Hi there, well it sounds as if you have a dry joint, try tapping around the area with the tv off and switch it back on,if still nothing, try this again,if it does come back on after trying this then you have a dry solder joint, for this you will have to aquire a soldering iron, some solder and a magnifying glass, turn the board over(with the set unplugged from the mains)and have a look around the area with the magnifying glass where this componant is,you should see a bad solder joint that may look slightly burnt,if so resolder and this should cure the problem,be carefull while doing this as if it is the mains condenser with the dry joint then it could have a charge in it so i would leave it off for at least 24 hrs before attempting the repair as if you get a jolt off it...it hurts, also this yellow round cylindrical thing you say could be a transformer.
