Lawn Tractor Engine-Start Problems

Hi...
I have a Briggs & Stratton Engine 5BSXS-5012 VP on a Sears LT-1000 Lawn Tractor. It's almost 4 years old, and runs like a top after I get it started.
My problem is that it no longer starts like it used to. I even bought a new battery with the same CCA Rating as the original battery that came on the tractor which worked perfectly each and every time. Now, I have to manually rotate the Engine-Shaft guard to relieve pressure on the cylinders. (At least that's what I think is happening) After doing this, the engine usually starts with help from a battery charger. This is the 3rd battery (New) that I've tried; so I don't think the problem is the battery.
What could have happened to the engine over the last year or so that causes it to be more difficult to start ? I change the oil and filters twice per year, and the oil still looks new to me.
Thank You !
Ed VA

I don't think it's the starter motor. This bigger engine has a compression release which allows it to crank with the compression released below a certtian rotational speed. This gizmo can hang up and not release if the engine sits for a long time etc.. What is supposed to happen is that the release stays effective until the starter can spin it up to speed before compression kicks in.

Ed, I think that when all is said and done you will find that you have a defective STARTER MOTOR. If the BATTERY is at full Charge, and it takes a Battery Charger added to the Battery in order to get enough current to turn over and Start the Motor. I suspect the Starter Motor is defective.
I also have Sears Tractors with Briggs, three of them.
Also clean your Spark Plug when you service the Engine.
Good Luck!

Wondered what year Sears made this tractor?

If the tractor has a Briggs engine, the code on the engine will give you the manufacturer date of the motor, most likely correlating with the model year of the tractor. Here is how you read the Briggs and Stratton engine code.

Where can I find the model number on my Sears riding lawn mower? It is about 6 or so years old.

Sears puts the model numbers under the seat on most machines since 1990. They are in the format
xxx.xxxxxx
example 538.678567

Did you loosen the coil when you changed the key? Check the setting between the flywheel and the coil. !0,000ths, I think.

After a thorough cleaning, seal the surfaces that are exposed with Acrylic Automotive Top Coat or "Clear Coat". The acrylic base dries to a rock hard finish that is diaelectric in nature and will protect the surfaces it bonds to. Regap from flywheel as normal and this should fix it for two, three years if the machine lives under a tarp in the elements. :D

Craftsman LT 1000 with Briggs and Stratton 20 OHV V-Twin Engine 42 inch cut model number 917271910 What year model tractor do I have?

lift your seat and look at the label that you got your model number from. to the right of the model number is the serial number. the first six digits of the serial number is the date your tractor was made - for example: serial no. 060802D002756 would make the unit made June 8, 2002
