The best way to check if the computer can access to Internet is to boot the comcputer to "Safemode with Netwroking", to do so, restart the computer and as soon as it restarts keep on tapping F8 key, now select "Safemode with Networking" from the Advance boot menu. Try to connect to internet. If you are able to connect to Internet then the issue is with the firewall on you computer, contact the firewall manufacture for settings. If you are still unable to connect to Internet, then the Internet setting are not correct, you may need to contact the ISP.
It appears that your Acer has 3 ports in the front center bottomportion of the laptop. One of them should be for plugging in an external microphone, one should be for external speakers, and one should be an input jack.http://complap.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/images/acer-travelmate-2420-2.192120139_std.jpg

Before going to your friends house you used to connect the laptop up via the network cable. Since youve tried your laptop on your friends wireless it no longer allows you to surf the web via the wireless nore the wired connection?
To me it sounds like a possible mis-configuration between your laptop and your linksys router. Depending on what operating system you are using you need to get into your network connection settings (usually in control panel) and either set the TCP/IP to automatically obtain ip address or set it correctly.
If you have never had to configure this in the past ensure that obtain automatically is set.
It depends on your lap top model weitheer you can turn it off. You could alwasy go innto internet explorer under connection settings and setup a fake dial up connection and make it the default connection. This will make it ask for permission before attaching to a wireless conection. I have windows XP pro on a laptop that I cannot turn off internet but it aslway ask before anyway because i have it set to connect to preferred networks only.
