Unplug the battery does it start with the power cable only? is the light on the power adaptor? is the power adapter plug loose in the laptop? It sounds like there could be some physical damage to charging port or the laptop if you get no response and It will need somebody with electronic skills to investigate.
If it's confirmed dead, don't throw it away, they are worth good money as spare parts on ebay. Unfortunately there is little you can do if there are no lights and it's totally unresponsive it needs to be looked at by a professional.
Incidentally if it is dead, don't throw it away losing your precious data, remove the hard drive and fit it to a usb caddy so you can recover your data on the replacement system

Yes it should work even without a battery, sound like a hardware problem possibly in the motherboard.

SOURCE: gateway 7422 laptop xp: shuts down randomly no

It seems to be that CPU is overheating. I request you to check CPU fan speed. If needed replace the CPU FAN. it will fix the problem.

Hi I closed my laptop to put into hibernation mode and then noticed 2 days later that the power light was stuck on and not in hibernation. Upon opening the screen back up nothing happened. No lights, no...

You can try this: Shut the computer down and unplug the power cord from the computer. Remove the battery, then push and hold the power button and sing happy birthday to it. Or wait 15 seconds. Then plug the power cord back and try turning the system on. After it boots up, providing this fixes the problem, you may then replace the battery.

Hope this helps!

Black screen but power lights are on and will not shut down or do anything

Hi

I would turn the laptop carefully upside down making sure that the power cord is NOT connected and remove the battery usually a slide catch or something similar holding it in position

hopefully that will cut all power to the laptop and hence hopefully shut down

when light go out and you can hear nothing then put battery back in and use power cord if needed

M-series gateway (m1629) press start button, nothing

Taken apart, looking for abnormal solder etc checked powers switches decided that this unit was acting like it may have shut down due to excessive heat issue. pulled battery on board, tested ok, re-installed everything and found that this unit now is active. Conclusion: I suspect the bios shut this unit down, hard reset correct this issue.

Son ran battery to zero after he broke power cord, now won't boot

Couple of things

First is to let it charge with the lid down for a few hours.
If that does not fix it then check that your son did not use the alternate display option FN F5 or FN F6 on the acers I think

If you still have no luck you might want to ask questions of your son before you take it to a repair shop

No power

This suggestion is a real long shot but at least it something you can try. It sounds like you've already ruled out all the other stuff I was going to suggest. Try replacing the CMOS battery on the mother board. It's one of those large flat batteries about the size of a nickel.
