Question about Kenmore 62642 / 62644 / 62649 Microwave Oven

Turntable doesn't turn

Just installed this microwave, and everything works except the turntable. I took the motor out and it works fine when you apply power. My multimeter showed no power at all going to the lines.

Tried it with turntable 'on' and turntable 'off'.

Tried switching out the door closed sensor switch with the one for the lights (which work) no luck.

Any ideas? The wiring seems to be secure...

Thanks for the input, I was afraid when the motor checked out that this would not be an easy problem!

Unfortunately, I bought the unit "NIB" from a contractor who had a couple extras after doing a new subdivision - great price, but now I'm unable to use a warranty I believe.

It looks like replacing the whole circuit board is about $150-175, which is more than I paid for it! Any chance I can try replacing just the relay on the board? Its a Kenmore, model 8162.

    Thanks again!

If you have a Touchpad Switch for Turntable On, Turntable Off . Then either the Touchpad Switch is defective, or the Turntable Power Relay is defective. Both are part of the Control Panel. No easy fix, Just replacement.

Get with the "Contractor". Perhaps he will exchange the unit, or set up a "Warranty" repair.

Possability of you repairing the Control Panel, unless you have extensive Electronic, Printed Circuit Knowledge, is Remote.

    Good Luck!

If you just purchased and Installed the microwave, I would call Sears and tell them what is happening, generally, it would still be under warranty if less than a year old. If its a countertop model, you may have to take it in, otherwise they should come to the home for the repair. I would also NOT indicate that you have looked at it as that would void your warranty.
Otherwise, it seems like the problem could be, a) touchpad , b) a relay or c) the main control board

If everything cooks as normal but the turntable does not turn then I would say that either the turntable motor has failed or the supply for the motor, either way this is not a problem you could fix yourself & so I would recommend taking to a microwave repair centre or service engineer.

Microwave lights, clock, and everything works except when you press start, it just counts down like its cooking, but the microwave is actually not on. No hum as usual or plate rotating. It just counts...

Hi, one of the most common reasons why the turntable won't rotate is that the microwave isn't clean. The turntable guide and carousel can get sticky, preventing the turntable from properly moving. If you have built-on food particles or liquids, fill a bowl with 2 or 3 cups of water and 1 tsp. of liquid detergent and lemon. Run the microwave for about 3 minutes. Clean the microwave with a cloth, including the base of the turntable, guide, carousel grooves and microwave base. Your microwave turntable won't rotate if the grooves on the base of the turntable do not sit right on the carousel. Also, check the position of the turntable guide. Place the guide directly under the turntable. Remove the turntable, and then reposition it into the carousel grooves.
Motor The carousel motor is located beneath the base plate of the microwave. If the carousel isn't turning at all, check the motor. Disconnect the microwave from the power source, and remove the turntable, guide and base plate. Try turning the motor to see if it's just stuck. If it doesn't turn freely after a few seconds, examine the motor to see if it's burned out or corroded. Use an ohmmeter to see if the motor has continuity. If not, you must replace the motor.
Bushings The drive bushings are plastic components that sit underneath the cooking plate. Remove the plate, and examine the bushings. Use a magnifying glass if necessary to see if any debris is caught in the plastic. Clean the bushings, and reinsert the plate. Turn the microwave on to see if it rotates. If the bushings are extremely worn or if some of the plastic is broken off, you need to replace it, which is a complicated repair for consumers. Contact a service technician for assistance.

Microwave turntable doesn't turn. Everything else

The turntable system typically consists of the motor, the coupler, the turntable support with rollers, and the tray.

Here is a video of how a turntable motor should sound when you rotate it by hand.

If yours is not set to be off via the control panel, and it won't rotate or it sounds like it's grinding, etc., you may have a bad motor or plastic coupler.

To replace either, you need to unplug power, then remove the bottom cover of the oven.

You can find links to helpful exploded view diagrams and part ordering help here.

But if you've recently had trouble with the cooktop lights, then the control board may be damaged.

Use a hair blow dryer to dry out the underside of the microwave. After you are convinced that it is dry you may operate it again.

That said, if it still is acting up read this:

When the microwave sounds okay, but there's no heat, one of the internal door switches, the high voltage circuitry, or the circuit board may have a problem. To resolve this problem, you need the assistance of a qualified appliance repair technician.

My turntable stopped rotating on my GEJVM1490 for no reason. everything else works fine, any suggestions?

There is a small motor underneath the microwave which turns the plate or turntable around.
If this is faulty then you will need a service agent to repair it.
