Canon EOS cameras manufactured in the late 1980s to early 1990s have an internal foam bumper for the shutter curtain which deteriorates with time, breaking down into an oily black tar. The tar oozes down and gets onto the shutter blades, causing them to stick. This results in the shutter either failing to open altogether or opening too slowly, resulting in blank or unexposed photographs.

Stuck shutter

It doesn't sound like a shutter problem, especially since the G12 doesn't actually have a mechanical shutter. It sounds as though there is either an exposure setting issue when the camera is in Manual mode or one of the other settings that will allow you to take a photo no matter the conditions. If it does the same thing when in full automatic there could be issues with flash or flash compensation or an internal issue. When it happens again, check to see that the camera has not accidently slipped into another mode.

Probably the shutter flex cable is broken inside the lensblock,or replace the lensblock, labor extensive, technical skill required.

This sounds like a stuck shutter, with the shutter stuck open. See this link, trying Fix #5A. If Fix 5A does not work, your camera is then likely experiencing a broken ribbon cable to the shutter control. Unfortunately, repairing that cable would be more costly than the value of the camera. Also, repairing the cable yourself is not recommended as finding a replacement cable would be just as costly, and the actual repair is very difficult.

A 620 canon camera iris does not open, photos seem

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

But if you notice shutter movement when you take a picture, then it's likely a failure of the CCD image sensor. If so, Canon WILL FIX THIS FOR FREE. This is a worldwide advisory for this issue. Go to www.Canon.com, select "support" in the left column, then your region on the map. Continue on to select your country. Search your countries website for support of the A85, and any "important information regarding your camera". Included there should be the info regarding the free repair. It's important to ONLY CONTACT OFFICIAL CANON SERVICE CENTERS listed on this webiste. Non-official repair centers may charge you for the repair, and merely ship the camera to the official Canon center for the free repair.

Here's a sample of the advisory notice for the US.

My Canon 20D is malfunctioning. The top right corner of all my photos are black. Please help!

Most likely the shutter blind sticking, so it will need a service. The cost might exceed the second hand value of the camera though.
