Question about Brother MultiFunction Center MFC-440CN All-In-One InkJet Printer
My MFC-440CN is connected to the network. I can print from any station but cannot scan, either from control panel or network station. Fault given at Control Panel is "Check Connection." Fault given from Vista Control panel when Test Scanner selected is "Test failed because device is not available. Verify connection and try again." The other control panel functions 'see' the device and report the correct IP.
Go to system/computer control panel, select "scanners and cameras". you should see your brother system in there (if u were able to print to it but not scan). Right click on it, select properties, and select "Network Properties" Tab. Choose select "specify your machine by address" rather by "by name". Most home/home office users dont have a local domain server at home, so even though your printer was named, it cannot be located by tcp-ip using the name, but rather by ipaddress. This solves the issue.

I had the same problem with my scan feature. While I don't have an absolute solution, I simply went into the Brother ControlCenter and used the scan feature in the program instead of the scan feature located on the machine. The ControlCenter is located in the Brother LAN folder if you used the default setup.
I hope this helps!!!

I fought with this issue four days before I spoke to an excellent tech at brother phone support. I have a DCP-9040CN on a wired network with multiple PCs running a variety of Windows operating systems. All the PCs can print to the Brother but cannot scan or copy.
Here is the 100% solution:
1. Run the twain reset utility at http://support.visioneer.com/utilities/twain_reset.exe
2. Next, there is a registry key that blocks network scanning. Open regedit and check the following key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Brother\ControlCenter\3.0\DCP-9040CN LAN\DeviceInfo\"EnableScan"=dword:00000001
If this key is set to "0", you will never be able to scan or copy through the network even though you have the ability to print.
That's all there is to it. You may even be able to skip the twain reset and get by with only step number two.
