Memory Card and the S5000

I recently put a 1 gig XD memory card in the S 5000 and it stopped working shortly after. The flash stopped at first then the camera would not turn on. After a couple days, I tried again and everthing seemed ok but that afternoon, the batteries were very hot even though the camera hadn't been on. It hasn't worked since. Could the larger card have caused this problem?

Thanks,

Brian.

    Coolguy008,

Thanks for the info. I'll follow up on your suggestions and try to get the battery replaced. I love the camera and don't want to buy another camera if not absolutely necessary. I'll let you know how it works out. Thanks again.

Hey there Brian V, your immediate problem should be related to the battery. If you still have it installed, remove it. Take a visual inspection of the casing, looking for anything unusual such as discolourations and/or eruptions. Also look inside the camera to ensure the connections have not been damaged, or have become corroded. In these cases, if there has been some leakage, the damage has most likely gone beyond the visible, and could damage connections and wires on the inside of the camera. I would suggest you replace the battery and cross your fingers it has't damaged the camera. The memory card should be fine, or at least seems unrelated to the problem. Good Luck!

Hi,

Fuji S5000 doesn't have an internal battery...it's a known motherboard/internal memory chip failure. Basically, they put a chip in there that will only last a couple years and then you either have to replace it (for a couple hundred bucks) or deal with correcting the settings everytime you change batteries (which will be more often now that some battery power is now dedicated to holding that internal memory settings). FujiFilm doesn't seem interested in correcting the issue via customer service either, very much a bummer!!

your S5000 contains a battery (lithium 'button' cell, I believe) which,
ordinarily, would enable the camera to store all the user settings. It
sounds as though yours (or its recharging circuitry, which is less likely)
has died. A year is rather a short life for these batteries in these cameras
but by no means unheard-of, unfortunately.
I don't know how easy it is to change the battery yourself on the S5000. If
you phone your nearest Fuji service centre and tell them how disappointed
you are (but otherwise very happy with their product... ;-) ) you may find
that they will do the job free - Fuji UK can be very good like this at
times.
You might find advice on changing the battery yourself on the forums of
various digital camera sites, such as www.DPReview.com - the Fuji forum
there is at
http://forums.dpreview.com/for ums/forum.asp?forum=1012
Hope this helps, and good luck with your camera.

Please don't forget to rate me as fixya..

My Fujifilm s5000 camera turns on but when I go to take a picture it turns off. I can view my pictures but can't take any.

Your memory card or internal memory may be full. I've run into situations where the card full doesn't flash on the monitor or LCD screen because there is lets say 3 gigs of memory left but the picture you are taking is 3.5gig's it won't take the picture because there isn't enough memory to put the image anywhere. Download your pictures to your computer, format your memory card and all should be good again. If you are using the internal memory you will need to obtain (buy) a memory card for your camera and download from the internal memory each picture from the memory card one by one until all the internal pictures are on the removable memory card then download these to the computer. After you have them on the computer go back into the internal memory and delete each of thse pictures and you are ready to start taking pictures once again. it took me longer to type this then the process will take to do.

New xd picture card compatability with olympus d-395

Check the maximum capacity memory card that your older camera will take. My Fuji will only take up to a 2gig card unless I flash the firmware in the camera to take the newer 4gig cards. Some of the older cameras maxed out at 1 gig or less. Check eBay for smaller capacity cards as they are getting hard to find in stores.

Olymp c-5000 won't turn on red/ yellow lights blink/ beep 20 time

Furrybutts (hehehe, like the name), This could be a lot of things and I'm sure there's a service guide out there that will tell us what 20 beeps and flashing lights mean, as I don't have one, let's figure it out.
Firstly, digi-cams and rechargables, eerrrrrgggg (Mr Burn's shudder) yeah they 'work', but for trouble shooting and iffy times, lets look at some half desent NEW alkaline batteries - for about $3-$4, it's worth it for this troubleshoot.
OK, did they work?, No?, lets look at the memory card. The cards are supporsed to be only put in one way, but ... lets take out the card, clean the contacts with a clean cloth/tissue, and put the card back in being sure it's in the right way. Still no go?
Take the card out again and try and turn the camera on without the card. Any changes?
This camera uses an XD memory card. I can't remember if it has an internal memory - what we're looking for is whether the memory is damaged and the camera is happy using it's internal memory or still erronous with no memory. Do you have access to another XD card to try it (this camera will take a MAXimum of 512mb, so don't try and card bigger).
Lets leave it at this for now and you let me know how things are going?

Can FUJI S 5000 support a 2 GB xD card ?

The answer is YES. Be aware thate there are 2 types of XD cards: type M and type H. The type M it is not recommended for movie recording with your S5000 camera. The type H does not have this problem. Here is fugi compatibility site : http://www.fujifilm.com/products/digital_cameras/accessories/card/s/

Fuji uses a 16MB xD card with the camera, which won't hold too many 4 Megapixel photos at the highest quality setting. So you should plan on buying a larger card right away. xD cards are currently available as large as 1GB, and I think 128MB is a good starter size for most people. Be warned that xD cards tend to be more expensive than CompactFlash and SD cards.

Memory Card Problem

I've solved it.
I'll bet a buck you also bought a memory card reader.
If you hook the memory card (or camera) to a computer, you'll see a directory with a name like fuji_999.
After you download the pictures delete that directory from the memory card, and the problem's solved.
I just did it with a 1 gig xd card in my daughter's fuji 480. It had a main directory on the card called DXsomething, and 2 subdirectories, fuji_100, and fuji_999.
I deleted all three directories (after saving the photos), and the problem is gone.
Hope it works for you.

XD Picture Memory Cards

What is the advantage of a 1 gig over two 512meg cards: Usually the 1 gig will be priced lower than 2 512 cards. The 1 gig card will hold twice as many photos. That is about it. .................... Brand name has turned out to be a non-issue for almost all memory cards. They have to be made to a standard and they will all work. Olympus and Fujifilm came up with the xD card. And Sandisk is a trusted card maker. I believe that Olympus may have a stitch feature that is only available if you use the Olympus brand of card. A gimmick to sell more of their brand of cards. This is pretty much of a non issue too, as there are plenty of software programs that can do stitching for panorama photos.
