Question about Maxtor OneTouch II external hard drive 300GB 7,200 RPM - FireWire & USB (E04W300)

1 Answer

It does not work with Vista.

I load the cd (drivers on my new Sony Viao laptop and I go to my computer and see the icon and lick it and it will not open. I right click over the icon and it will not open. I also get some application error when I reboot the laptop.

Thanks for the help.

My Maxtor Onetouch II external hard drive will store files if saved manually (dragging files from DOCUMENTS pane to DRIVE F pane) but not using the ONETOUCH button. This is dissatisfactory because I understand the onetouch automatically updates the hard drive with all new or edited files - so you don't have to remember which files you've created or edited each day, when you back up - it's all done automatically. I wish the software that came with ONETOUCH II was compatible with VISTA. My Maxtor Onetouch cost around £100 just two years ago yet has become outdated and dysfunctional just because a new version of windows has been brought out. Shouldn't there be a download which updates the software to make the ONETOUCH work with windows vista? I followed the links to the 'It does not work with vista...' posting and all it you get is a site describing which Maxtor products will work with Vista - instead of a solution to the problem.

From what I can tell from the Seagate/Maxtor site, the drive will work in Vista...but not the software it comes with. when you plug it in, does Vista recognize and install drivers for a "Removable Drive"? If so you should see it list in Windows Explorer, and just be able to manipulate it like a hard drive. It also notes that you should use Vista's built in backup utility instead of the Maxtor one. Here is a link to the Vista Compatibility that I got this information from. Hope this helps.

You must partition the new hard drive, sometimes that step can be bypassed by just hitting Enter at the prompts. It has to be partitioned and then the partition has to be formatted through the Windows setup routine. By sure and partition it as a primary partition.

My Western digital 1tb wont work inspite of drivers being instal

Mybook does not require any additional driver to work on systems from Win XP onward, same for recents Linux and MAC OS.
If the drive is not detected on more of one computer, then it is usually because of a fault.
Try a replacement cable (mybook uses Mini USB to USB, available at computer and at camera shops). If still no luck contact WD, mybooks have one year warranty. If you want to recover data, the disk must be mounted on a different enclosure, that service can be asked when discussing repair.

Not Recognized?

Hi,
The device driver is causing a conflict with the system. If you have got any specific cd with hardrive install the driver from the cd. Otherwise , i would suggest try changing he manufacturer of the hdd and get a new one. If you have recently bought it.
Otherwise try creating a new account in windows vista on your computer and then try plugging in the drive

My drive is not recognized

I've had this problem before.

I tried a different cord and it started working again. Additionally i've had this work for me (see below)

Try This:

  1. Unplug all USB devices
  2. Turn off Ext Hard drive
  3. Shut down computer
  4. Power on ext hard drive (then wait like 1 min)
  5. Turn on computer
  6. Wait for windows to finish loading
  7. Plug in the USB cord from the ext hard drive to your computer (may take up to a minute for computer to recognize it)
  8. If it doesn't recognize it then keep trying it in different USB ports
If it still won't recognize get all the latest windows update and reboot. If that doesn't solve your issue try your external hard drive on some other computers, check to see if drive needs special drivers installed (which most don't).

From SimpleTech's website: "1) I have the drive plugged in but I cannot find the drive in "My Computer", why?
The most likely cause would be not enough power provided by a single USB port on your computer. Unplug the portable drive from the cable and unplug the cable from the computer. Now, plug the cable into 2 USB ports directly on your computer. (If you have a desktop, you should plug the USB cable directly into the USB ports on the back of the computer. If this is a laptop, you should plug directly into a USB ports on the computer. Do not plug into a USB hub or docking station). Then plug the drive into the cable. In a few seconds you should see the drive listed in the "My Computer" window as a SimpleDrivePS."

If all that fails you need to RMA (Return to Manufacturer) your external hard drive. Most hard drives have a pretty decent warranty on them. Your simpletech 250GB has a 3 year warranty on it. Info on the warranty can be found at http://www.simpletech.com/support/warranty/. If you want to RMA it, click the "Technical Support / RMA Request" on the left hand side of that page.

None of my external hard drives or flash drives recognized by Vista

Ok Go into your hardware device manager and uninstall your Universal Serial Bus Controllers and if there is mass storage device also uninstall it. Click on action -> scan for hardware changes, then it should automatically install the drivers back now it should detect.
