should this be happening on a near new tv

  • romanch_m May 04, 2008

I have a Toshiba 42HL167. Bought it about 5 months ago and honestly I am not a very tech savy person and definitely dont know enough about TV's. Last week when I turned on my TV, the picture was fine for about 10 mins then it went all fuzzy (broke out into stripes of colors). Also when I turn the TV on it makes a buzzing sound for about 30-45 seconds and then the sound goes off. Today the problem persists and happens about a minute or so after I turn the TV on. I called to company ppl and they asked me to hook up a DVD player and see if the problem persists when I try to watch a movie. Unfortunately, it does. Please let me know if there is a quick fix to this! Thanks

Firstly check the scart(euro)connecters are securely in when the fault appears both on the tv and the video source otherwise It sounds like an internal fault, when this happens try tapping the back lightly all over to see if that rectifies the fault,if it does then it is proberbly a dry joint and will take some close inspection internally in which case you will have to call out an engineer unless you feel confident enough to have ago yourself but unless you have some experiance i would not advise it.

Ah you did not mention it is a near new tv,quite simply if it is under waranty then call the shop where it was purchased or the manifacturer,if it is out of waranty then try the solution i previously posted.

I have sound but no picture. What is wrong.

In order to ensure, it is not caused by the input device, connect a DVD player and see. Switch off TV, switch off power, remove plug and wait for 48 hours and retry.
If problem persists, I suggest it is better to refer it to a qualified service technician, since the back cover has to be opened for investigation/rectification.

Tv out of foucs

These procedures are from the owners manual, go into menu and then picture quality and then: Convergence The Convergence feature lets you adjust the TV’s three tubes. When the TV tubes’ images are precisely aligned, they create the color images you see on the screen. Over time, the picture can drift out of alignment (this is normal). If your picture seems fuzzy or has a yellow tint, using Convergence could correct this misalignment. Only one convergence is needed for all inputs, regardless of the signal format. Note: Make sure the TV has been on for at least 30 minutes (TV needs to warm up for best results) before starting Auto Converge or Red/Blue Centering. When you select the Convergence feature, a submenu appears with three options: Auto Converge Automatically aligns the projection lenses to self-correct color images. You’ll see flashing squares of color dance across the screen (this is normal). Note: After performing auto convergence, use the Blue Centering and Red Centering menus to fine tune convergence in the center of the screen, if necessary. Blue Centering Aligns the blue and green images to fine-tune the picture. Red Centering Aligns the red and green images to fine-tune the picture. Note: The ability to change channels is disabled when adjusting the convergence options. The TV must be tuned to a usable signal to converge the picture.

Black/Green Distortion - Picture Quality - Wharfedale

This is no solution but a point in a probable direction.

A tech guy told me ALL the LCDs they have seen in their repair shop have "swollen" capacitors, this is due to voltage instability. Lowering the internal voltage regulator and replacing the swollen capacitors (which eliminate noise) apparently restores the LCD to new working quality. Without actually "seeing" my problem the tech said that should repair it. I have not tried this yet but eventually will begin that way.
