After a mains power outage my Acer AL1715 came up with a very low brightness screen. Confirmed as monitor fault on second PC. Brightness set at 100% in menu, but only highlights visible on screen. Pressed auto config which momentarily brings it up to full brightness, then it drops back to the low brightness screen again. Tried reset from the menu which also momentarily brings it up to full brightness, then it drops back to the low brightness screen yet again. It knows there's something wrong as it tries an auto-config ever time it powers up. Is there an internal hardware reset button?

The screen itself is starting to go bad which is why your having to turn up the brightness to 100% just to see something. Replacing the screen would cost more then the whole lcd monitor itself so its best to get a new one.
We are seeing this same "issue" with this model regularly. If there is no screen and No led/lights, then the power supply has gone out.
It appears on that model there is an external power supply.
Google the model number of the Monitor for replacement parts.
Plug something into the same outlet and verify the outlet is good.
I have an ACER AL 1706 monitor that would not power up completely. After pushing the power button, only the yellow light would stay on indication a power up fault. After careful inspection of the power boards caps, there was visible swelling of the 47mF and 22mF radial caps on the top part of the caps where the tiny cannisters 4 edges are folded down flat. I replaced these caps( 6 on my board) because there is reaaly no way to actually test them and bought new ones from Radio Shack. Now my Acer monitor came back to life with no other problems. I recommened using replacement caps with same microfarad values, but if the voltage rating is not exact, it is o.k. to get the next higher voltage rated caps available and should work fine.
Certain versions of the Acer AL1715 monitor had a problem with the VGA socket. Specifically, the plastic case around the socket was not wide enough. The plastic lip interfered with the plug and so the plug does not seat properly. This causes all sorts of intermittent problems. The version of the AL1715 with the problem with had the UPC code of 0 99802 19889 3. I fixed several of these monitors by shaving off the excess plastic with a Dremel Mototool. A hand file would probably work as well. You have to remove the plastic back to get the clearance to do the job.
Normally there is a fuse that can be replaced inside on the power supply board. The are usually "slow blow" fuses and need to be replaced by an equivalent fuse. Many monitors have a soft switch which is controlled by the main board that tells the relays to supply power from the power supply. The CMOS devices on these boards are very suceptible to static so ground your hand to the chassis before touching any boards. If the backlight is out but there is a faint image on the screen when you look at it closely then the inverter board or CFT tubes are suspect. BTW: watch the Power supply and inverter boards as the caps stay charged and could result in electrical shock. Good luck. Hope this helps.
You may be encountering a hardware fault that numerous people appear to be having (myself included).
Get a bright torch and point it at the screen once it's 'gone blank'. Look for any text / images that you'd expect to be displayed.
You will normally see a faint display which shows that the problem is just with the backlights. Unfortunately the inverters for these are built into the power supply (Delta Electronics, model no. ADP-40AF) so you will more than likely need to replace this. It's probably easier, simpler and cheaper to buy a replacement (non-Acer) monitor!
