If you are able to play Playstation 2 games, but not PS3 games then that means the blu ray laser has went bad. The lasers are a 2 part laser, The PS2 games take a lot less power to read than the blu ray or PS3 games, that is why you can still play PS2 games but not PS3s.
The lasers are a little bit pricy for these units, $60-$80 depending on which model laser is in your unit.
I recommend that you have a professional install the new laser in your unit because of the sensitive nature of the internal electronics.
One thing you don't want to do is damage the original blu ray drive mother board, the blu ray drive has Firmware on it that has to match the motherboard of the Ps3 unit or it will not play anything at all.

Your system is shuttting down due to a blu-ray drive failure(most likely a problem with the pcb on the bluray drive.)You need to replace the compatible pcb you have to match up the revisions also.

It is very hard to find , these pcb boards are rarely listed online.


Find a console repair shop around your area, and see if they may have the part you need, otherwise sell your unit for parts. With blu-ray lasers being expensive, you can still easily get 80-100 for the unit.

Hi, unfortunately this is a very common problem with the PS3 and usually means the blu ray laser has become faulty. You can either give Sony a call and if it is under 1 year old they will replace it free of charge or you may have to pay around £130 for it to be repaired. You could try using a lens cleaner disc and see if that helps. Lastly you can have a look on ebay for a replacement drive. They usually sell for around £50 and are very easy to replace. If you google PS3 blu ray replacement you will find youtube guides on how to do it. You must however make sure you know the model of your PS3. It is on a white label on the back of the console and it starts CECH---. Next if you do replace the drive you will need to keep the circuit board that is screwed onto your drive as this is paired to the motherboard. If you do not swap the circuit boards the drive will never work. Have a look on youtube, the guides are pretty easy to follow.

Well from what i hear it is just that the laser inside the ps3 that reads the disc could be damaged, dirty, or even not in the right spot. sometimes the read laser that reads the disc can move from on spot to another if you hit the ps3 or if it falls (ETC).

dont change the drive change the laser dhe drives are coded to each ps3 if that dosent work just change the hard drive whit the one that works
