My patio heaters won't light anymore. I want to bypass the safety devices and have just an on/off system. Any idea on where I can get parts?

Been there done that. I have 3 patio heaters. One of them I have replaced all the heater components. Multiple times throughout the year spiders clog the lines. I have cleaned them multiple times. Right now the problem seems to be in the safety device. It will not let the burner light. The pilot light is lit.

My barbacue works on propane and is a simple on off. Turn on the gas and gas comes out the burner. Why are patio heaters so different?

By pass the safety device and you will experience a endless summer, my friend. Please do not even try to do this!

You probably have a spider ploblem in the gas supply line. Spiders love the smell of this gas and move in.

Disassemble the device (DO NOT DISASSEMBLE THE VALVE or the gas line to it!!!) and blow air through all hoses and pipes. Your propane dealer probably has a tool to clean the orifice. Go buy one ... while you are there, ask for his or her advice. If you get your gas at the BIG box store - go find the little BBQ store in your town - the guy that depends on selling grills and fireplace inserts for a living. He or she can help you.

Thanks for your quesiton at FixYa.com

I work with propane. Those safety devices you want to defeat are there for very good reason. You may have 'been there and done that' - I can tell you my friend, you have never experienced the full rath and fury of propane unleashed.

There is some good reason for your burner to not light - something is not correct or proper and the safety device is keeping you from being blown to smitherens. Please get it repaired by a professional.

Every gallon of liquid (in the tank) turns into 375 gallons of gas on your patio or in your shed or where ever you are using these heaters. Propane is NOT allowed in enclosed buildings for good reason. The gas is heavy and will sink to the lowest point. In your house, it will sink to the basement (if you have one) or to the lowest floor level. Do you have any electric motors or switches or electrical outlets low to the floor where there may be a spark if you plug or unplug some device? There is NO practical or safe way to get it out of your basement safely, by the average person.

The safety devices prevent gas from accidently escaping. The tank on the other hand, has a device that prevents over pressurization; it will release gas if necessary to prevent problems in that area. The gas doesn't care how it gets out - it just wants out. Once out, if not used on the spot, it becomes a big liability.

Please reconsider your position. I would rather chat with you here than to read about you in the paper.

    Thanks for listening.

Your BBQ has On and Off - you stand there and control it - no pilot light - no automatic control or operation - no safety features required or necessary for this short term use - no thermocouple and little adjustment - Your BBQ is in the yard or sidewalk maybe on the patio or just off of it, away from buildings - never in the garage or the barn or the shed or under some temporary shelter during construction or renovation. No one messes with the BBQ but the cook who stands there and watches it and shuts it off after 20 or 30 minutes of use.

Your heater is a syphisticated heating appliance. It is the difference between a walking and riding in a car.

I hope I have helped you with your Patio Heater question in the Free Section of FixYa.com.

Thank you for this opportunity to have been of assistance.

Can i bypass the dump switch on my patio heater

Jerry, not recommended (found this out through Googling "dump switch patio heater what for")
Apparently a dump switch is a safety cutout (I think a tilt switch is the same thing) that will cut the gas supply if someone knocks the patio heater over . It's not manually operated, it probably has something like mercury in it, so that the "switch-off" circuit is completed when the heater is tilted to a certain angle and the gas cuts off. Check links below to see why not to modify heater safety dump switch. press the helpful button

The pilot won't ignite. It's a table heater that worked perfectly one day and didn't the next. Help please.

Look for dust or contaminants inside the pilot safety device. Blow it out with shop air or flush it with rust buster. If yours is electronic look for contaminated flame sensing device. Clean it with emory cloth and rock on.

Pilot light won't stay lit when I let go of the igniter knob. Flame is yellow and long.

Sounds like the Thermocouple has failed and needs to be replaced. It's not difficult to do. But, finding the part may be. Blue Rhino, is the manufacturer for Endless Summer Patio Heaters, so start there.

I have blue rhino patio heater, the pilot will come on for a few minutes then goes out. When it goes out the main flame goes out also?? Any ideas? There appears to be a thermocoupler near the pilot flame...

If the pilot gets the least bit of dust in the safety will mimmick a low oxygen situation and cause the heater to shut down. The fix is easy. You must blow out the pilot safety device. More HERE

I go thru the process of lighting the pilot light following the directions exactly, but as soon as I let the pilot light switch pop out so that I can turn it to the left to light the heater the flame goes...

The system works off of a thermocouple that is heated by the pilot. The thermocouple creates millivolts that magnetize a head behind the control knob. When you push in the knob the magnetized head behind the knob holds the gas valve open. So obviously the head is not being magnetized. First make sure that the pilot is not plugged and the flame is large enough to heat the thermocouple. Also sometimes you may need to hold the knob for several minutes before the pilot will stay on. Also patio heaters have a safety feature that will cut the millivolt circuit if the heater falls over. It is possible that this safety device is tripped or defective causing the pilot to not stay lit. Also check for any loose wires on the millivolt system.

Patio Heater goes on after 10 minutes

If it is an LP heater, try replacing the regulator.

Patio Heater pilot lights won't stay lit

crappy pilot flame (not properly heating the thermocouple), bad thermocouple, thermocouple loose where it screws into the pilot safety valve, bad safety valve magnet.

One or more of those is the problem.

Oh...there is also a saftey switch...in case it tips over. It will also cause the pilot to not stay lit (if the switch or wires that go to i are faulty)
