Palm Z22 will not turn on

My Palm worked fine before Christmas...sat on my desk for 2-3 weeks, then would not turn on at all nor will it apparently take a charge.  It's just a bit over a year old, but it would seem that it must be the battery-could that be so soon?      I've tried a "soft reset", but nothing.  The screen will not light, even when being "charged".
Help!

Having the same problem....you guys find any solutions yet?

  • karenannmag Feb 16, 2008

I appreciate tontonton's suggestion.  Didn't make any difference however.  Interesting that "guest" had the same problem and her unit was only 7 months old.  Palm makes an outstanding product doesn't it.

PALM Z22-IT WAS WORKING FINE ONE DAY, AND THE NEXT IT WON'T TURN ON. ITS JUST OVER A YEAR OLD.

  • jwhedon May 24, 2008

Wow... that gave me a scare. My wife's PDA is exactly 31 days old and did the same thing. I'm glad I found this and did the reset as it fixed it. I had just called Best Buy and was ready to exchange for a new one (which they said they would do). I wish I could still do this, but I'm sure now that it's working again they'll just say "nothing's wrong with it now".

  • skysinger23 Dec 17, 2008

I have the same problem. I got it as a Christmas present and it worked great until mid-February...I've tried everything so I guess I'll have to take it to a shop and see if something can be done.

Glad I'm not alone on this one, though.

My Palm z22 is at least 5 years old and the battery charge warning appeared on the sceen and it was a couple of days before I could charge it. The Palm would not charge and the screen was completely black. Will the reset button cause the Palm to lose all of the data on it. I do not have a back up since I never could transfer the data to my computer...I originally had a Wizard and I paid a third party to transfer the data from the Wizard to the Palm and I don't know if that was the problem. However that was five years ago and currently the new data added would not transfer to my computer. I even paid a professional computer support person and he could not transfer the data. I have alot of time and money invested in this Palm and I would be very appreciate for any suggestions/help.

I had the same problem, nothing when turning the z22 on. Solution #3 worked perfectly. After appr. half an hour it responded to the reset button (I tried it several times before the half hour was passed, but then nothing happened)

I had this problem in the very beginning and a few times after. What worked is the following.
Put it to charge for at least half an hour. You won't see it is charging or anything.
Then, while connected to the charger, press the reset button.
Have you guys tried it like this already?

Well you can try a trickle charging on the device.Trickle charging is connecting the device to the computer using the USB cable and then let the device get charged using the computer power source, make sure that you charge the device for 6-8 hrs on the computer.

Palm z22 touchscreen not responding

The Z22 palm PDA is subjected to 3 points of failure. I got a used Z22 and discovered all 3 over the course of a few years. The touchscreen digitizer on the front is a plastic sheet on the top, and a glass screen on the bottom. Invisible layers of conductive paint are facing each other. Simply carrying the Z22 in your pocket, purse, briefcase, or even storing it in a drawer with pencils, staplers, rulers, etc., will, over time, deform the screen, and the damage is cumulative, so that the screen gets worse and worse. It is imperative to have a solid sheet of plastic or hard material over the screen at all times that you are not using it. Leaving the Z22 in direct hot sunlight will heat up and soften the screen, making the problem worse. Carrying the Z22 screen in your pocket on a hot day when you are sweating, will do the same. People report that the Z22 will work in a cool place like North New York, but the screen will quit, when they travel to Florida (hot). I have temporarily fixed the touchscreen by putting it in a ziplock, and sticking it in the freezer to shrink the top layer of plastic. That only worked twice. Then I use a hair dryer to heat the screen VERY hot, to shrink the screen - which worked very well, until I put it in a soft zippered camera case, which gently pushed the screen. Then I took the screen apart completely ( which no one has ever reported doing) and this worked amazingly well, -again- until I put it in a soft case that pushed the screen against the glass backing. I eventually replaced the touchscreen ($10 free shipping from China). All the information is on my tiny website at
http://kidbots.com/WEBADD/Z22_PALM_PILOT/Z22_PALM_PILOT.html
The Z22 is incredibly well designed, and after ripping it apart a dozen times, and carrying it around under extreme heat and freezing cold, I would have to give the original design team at PALM, 5 stars. Your data, on the device, even though the screen may be dead, is very safe, and unless you do a HARD RESET, the data is stored on permanent memory. I had problems with a weak and dying battery, which ALL Z22s are now experiencing, since the decades of time, even with a "new" in the box, sealed Z22 will have. Low glitches of power on the battery seem to cause the BlackScreen of *****, where the LOGIC circuits that control the ON/OFF/SLEEP etc. functions get out of sync, and the unit will not charge or turn on until ALL power is removed ( typically, after a few weeks the battery drains to dead ).
All these problems are discussed and solutions posted, with photos on my website. Also are discussions on what to do with the Z22, where to get parts, how to maintain the Z22, and how to get data off the device onto the new 64 bit WINDOWS computers...
Good luck. The Z22 was an amazing device in its day, and people report that there were a few software programs for it that have never been made since - hence, they still use it...

I have a Palm z22 that won't keep a charge. My

The Palm Z22 is, I have found out, a bullet-proof design in regards to reliably keeping your valuable "DATA" safe over time. The Engineers at PALM really did a good job of Data integrity compared to many other devices. HOWEVER -- there are 3 common problems with the growing AGE of the Z22, 2 are with the dying batteries, and 1 with the years of wear and tear on the touch screen. The battery is a typical square, thin, modern Lithium battery, wired in with two wires ( + positive, red, and - negative, black ) that can be
taken out and replaced if you take the unit apart. In a brand new, in-the-box package, the battery is dying simply from old age. If the Z22 was used heavily, the constant cycling from dead to fully charged wears out the battery even more. The Touchscreen is a thin layer of plastic stretched over a sheet of glass, with a tiny air gap in between. Over time, the top plastic layer deforms - with hot and cold, air pressure changes, and being pressed by wearing the unit in a pocket, purse, briefcase, or even in a drawer with pencils, pens, and staplers etc. It is very important to have a hard cover over the screen! Other than just having the battery loose its weak charge continually, there is a problem with the unit getting into a state of BLACK SCREEN - it does not charge and remains "apparently" dead, since the logic circuits are in an invalid state, and it can only be reset if the battery dies COMPLETELY to remove the power on the logic circuits.
I have covered the topics of the battery problems, the data problems, the screen problems, and the disassembly, maintenance, and security, and how to get data off the unit, particularly to the new Windows Operating Systems that were developed AFTER the Z22 was no longer made. This is at
kidbots.com/WEBADD/Z22_PALM_PILOT/Z22_PALM_PILOT.html
I have ripped apart the Z22 repeatedly, and posted pictures of the various steps to service these units. There are links to aftermarket software to transfer data, and examples of how to USE the Z22, for valid purposes. This should be a one-stop source for any information or troublehooting the Z22, for those who have the Z22 and want to keep it operating!
good luck

How do i fix the touch screen on my palm z22?

Palm z22-Touchscreen wont work

The Palm Z22 is a very solidly designed device to reliably store your personal data, however, it is subject to 3 failure mechanisms, all related to its AGE of over a decade of use. The batteries are all dying - even in an UNOPENED, sealed, "AS-NEW" package, the battery is almost dead. The TOUCH SCREEN is a delicate stretched layer of plastic on top of a layer of glass. The top layer bends down a touches the glass layer, and invisible layers of "wiring", electro-deposited on the layers, touch each other. Over time, with air-pressure changes, heat and cold, and mostly objects pressing on the screen (such as carrying it in a pocket, purse, briefcase, or even leaving it in a drawer with pencils, paper, pens, staplers, etc.) , the top plastic layer deforms and touches the bottom layer, which renders the touch screen dead.
My page on the Z22 is at :
kidbots.com/WEBADD/Z22_PALM_PILOT/Z22_PALM_PILOT.html
and has tips and tricks on temporarily getting your screen working, as well as how to replace it yourself - $9 U.S. free shipping from China.
I hope that this helps you get your Z22 up and running again, and helps you to keep it functioning.

good luck

Buy a new one and get a 2 year extended warranty. Save yourself a lot of time. BestBuy is selling them for $89.99 plus $12 for the warranty which includes 1 replacement. If you like the Z22 this is the best deal
