I've had this problem.... several times. Its not a driver problem. You need to return the machine to ASUS if you are still within the warranty period. They can then repair it.
For me this meant replacing the Mother Board! I thought that this was quite a drastic measure. But it solved the problem. If you look online, problems with the onboard speakers is quite common with this model. There is speculation that putting a device in and out of the headphone jack may be the trigger. In any case, ASUS needs to repair this problem as you should not have to put up with this. Hope this helps.
