Question about HP VECTRA VLI8 P3 Motherboard (KZM6120)

Hp vectra vli8 p3 continues rebooting

Hope someone can help,
A friend gave me his old computer because he said he went to load W2K on it and it doesn't work work anymore. When you turn it on, it goes thru the BIOS screen. The screen then goes blank and when the Windows boot screen comes up(the one with the progress bar at the bottom) the computer locks up.
I have tried formating the HD, putting another OS on it, tried another HD, and I get the same results. With the other HD, it just continues booting. It goes thru the BIOS screen, goes blank, and then continues the loop.
I have flashed the BIOS, cleared the cmos with no success.
Would appreciate any help.

    Thanks map9966,
I ran the test. It did not show any problems, but I at least have the program now.

    Thanks map9966,
I will give these prgs. a try and post back to let you know.
My friend was using 98 and went to add W2Kpro to it when all the problems started.

    Google bad caps on motherboard.
I just revived a VLi8 which had this problem. For the KZM-6120
motherboard that I have there a six 1500 uF, 6.3 volt capacitors lined
up in front of the pentium III heatsink. Look for gunk oozing out the
base of the capacitors. Mine had dark brown stains at the base on the motherboard. This is a well-known problem apparently. See
    here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_p...

    Symptoms
sound similar. What mine did was that the computer wouldn't reboot
after windows 2000 reinstall, locked up during boot, and the orange lock
light would be on sometimes. I could only run from a floppy. Updated
    bios, changed HD, nothing worked.

Replaced the six caps, and I have reinstalled the system (2000 pro) and everything is working fine.

    Thanks PAUL2025,
I finally got around to replacing those caps on the motherboard. I put the board back in computer and was able to install PCBSD without a hitch.
Thanks again, I will write up an article for computer club newsletter about this and let them know there is great help for all on the forums.

try full memory test option from BIOS screen setting (disable fast startup)...seems like a bad memory area...alternately, try pulling one memory module at a time until change observed.

John, you can download a program that allows you to create a bootable floppy disk or a bootable CD that will test your memory at start -up.
It's a free download & is called Memtest86+. Click the link below. Scroll down till you see, ** Memtest86+ V1.70 (01/14/2007) ** in red lettering. Pick your flavior ISO or ZIP.

Good luck!

Go to HP's website, find the model you use, and download the sound driver. Or, if you use a third party sound card, go to their site and download their audio driver.

I hope this helps.

Upgrade motherboard

First do you have the mini-tower or the desktop version - second the backplane style MB's are getting hard to come by - so major cutting and modding needed to mount ATX style MB - third it's time for a newer pc case to work with....
