Nuvi 660 Volume

When the volume is turned all the way up the sound is still too faint to be easily heard. Can the output be increased?

Navaho, Here's some "real" information for you. It sounds like the audio output stage may be defective or you have a defective internal speaker.

Try plugging a pair of headphones into the unit and see if you have plenty of volume there. If you do, the speaker is defective. If the sound is still weak, then the audio output stage is defective. That stage is common to both the speaker and headphone jack.

If the sound is okay on the headphones and you don't want to spend the money or hassle having the Nuvi fixed, you can buy a FM transmitter and plug it into the headphone jack and play the Nuvi through your car stereo. You can pick one up at Best Buy. They are used on Ipod's and CD players.

Sonyhoppes, since you appear to hang out in the Nuvi 660 portion of this site, I challeging you to actually provide a "real" and "solid" solution to any of the questions here and without flaming others.

Perhaps I am just expecting too much out of you. No doubt you will blow off the challenge and just insult me to elude the fact that you are nothing more than an "appliance operator" with little or no knowledge or experience in anything.

If you spent half as much of your time actually helping people than flaming them, you could actually acquire a reputable reputation here and gain respect among your peers.

So blow off the challenge and continue to insult.... you'll just be proving my point and my opinion of you.

I had the same problem with my unit. I went back to The Source and they told me it was normal. I had a garmin streetpilot before the nuvi and the sound was much better.
The streetpilot has 2 speakers and the nuvi only has one. I had another problem with my nuvi and I exchanged it for another one and the volume problem is gone.
Use the male voices over the womans they seem to be recorded louder.
My problem is over

First check if your nuvi is not on mute by touching the button next to the volume that reads mute, then you try to increase the volume. To increase the volume:
  1. from the main menu,
  2. Touch the volume,
  3. Then you adjust it with the left and right direction button to increase it or reduce it.
If that does not solve the problem, then you need to reset the nuvi, by holding the power button for about 15 seconds. It will restart itself. Or you can remove the battery and install it back in. If that does not solve the problem, then it is an internal problem.

Garmin Nuvi 610- working perfectly then sudden crackling and now loss of sound/or at best crackly and intermiitent sound- but map/navigation and on-screen directions fine

Check the audio output setting on the nuvi. There is a possibility that the FM Transmitter setting has been turned on or that the device has been muted.
To check the audio output setting:
  1. Touch the Speaker icon below the Wrench icon.
  2. At the bottom of the screen, touch Audio Output.
  3. Make sure that the Internal Speaker is selected and touch OK (660, 670, 680, and 5000 models only).
  4. Make sure that the MUTE box does not have a check mark in it. If it does, touch the box to clear the selection.
  5. Make sure the volume level is at a reasonable percent level.

In case it is a software problem try this and see if it will fix it......follow these steps.
1. Power off the unit.
2. HOLD down the power button and you will see "Pre Boot Mode" appear on the lower part of the display. KEEP HOLDING the power button down and the display will flicker, do this until the pre boot mode message disappears. This seems to take a long time (60 seconds at least).
3. Once the pre boot mode message disappears release the power button and your device will perform some activites to try recover from the problem.

Can you update the firmware on your unit
my k800i sony phone had a problem synchronising and would freeze, then one day the nuvi 660 updated the firmware by itself and has been fine since, only problem being the volume, a bit low when trying to contest with large diesel engine, onboard speaker keen to distort over 80% volume
