Stick something under the left white hook actually worked for me because there wasn't a spring there to get in the way. The two hooks are connected by a rod so they will both get elevated and the right hook will actuate the microswitch when the cover is closed.

HP LaserJet P2015 Series Printer - Replace the pickup roller (tray 1)
Unplug the power cord from the printer, and allow the printer to cool.
Press the print-cartridge-door button to open the print-cartridge door.
Remove the print cartridge.
After removing the print cartridge, only handle it on the ends.
Grasping the pickup-roller cover with thumb and forefinger, squeeze the left side of the pickup-roller cover to release the left retaining tab, and then slide the cover to the left and up.
Failure to slide the cover to the left when removing it can cause the right retaining tab to break.
Press the two black retaining tabs outward until the pickup roller is released from its seat.
Remove the old pickup roller from the printer.
Line up the black retaining tabs in the printer with the grooves in the new pickup roller, and then press the pickup roller into the pickup-roller seat until the retaining tabs click.
Do not touch the pickup-roller pad.
Grasping the pickup-roller cover with thumb and forefinger, insert the pickup-roller cover's right retaining tab into the retaining slot.
Squeeze the left side of the pickup-roller cover and insert the left retaining tab in the retaining slot.
Make sure the printer is on, or press the "Power" button to
turn it on. Wait for the printer to finish any warm-up diagnostics or
print jobs it is performing.
Open the access cover to the print heads. This cover may be
the top cover, the front door or an ink access door on the front of the

the sticker and transparent tape from the back and bottom of each ink

and a black cartridge at the same time.
Insert the new ink cartridges. Make sure the
color ink cartridge is secure in the left ink cartridge carrier and the black
ink cartridge is secure in the right ink cartridge carrier.
Snap each lid closed.
Close the front cover. The front cover must be
closed to start a print job.

clicking Start® Programs or All
Programs® Dell Printers® Dell Photo Printer 720® Dell Printer Solution Center.
Click the Maintenance tab.
Click Install a new print

The inner cover is a flap on the inside in front of the carriage when it is at rest when the cover us open. You had to flip the inner cover down to access the ink cartridges.
Open the cover. The inner cover is in the center and need to be flipped up.
Verify that the type of paper specified in the Type is text box matches the type of paper being used. A paper jam might result if photo paper is specified in the Printer Properties dialog box, but plain paper is loaded in the printer.
There are two switches, so if you changed the one that was working....
Possible parts affected could be
- cover top
- cover fuser
- cover front assembly
- the switch
1) check the condition of the cover - top, front assembly and cover fuser closed?
2) on the cover top there is an "actuator", a plastic bit, which
presses down on the switch assembly top - is that plastic bit broken,
bent or deformed?
3) on the cover front assembly there is also an "actuator", check this
4) and of course same for the fuser cover
5) top cover, check the switch, disconnect the switch (P116-1) and
press/release it - does that make a difference. If not replace switch
6) same procedure with the switch (P115-1) for front cover.
