Ps2 games suddenly stopped working on ps3

Ps2 games were working fine on my ps3 however when i went to boot up GT4 on ps2 the other day the screen stayed blank after launching it from the menu and no sound or graphics appeared at all, even though i had been playing the same game just the day before. I tried other ps2 games and found the same problem. Ps3 games still work fine though!

I was recently playing Persona 3 FES(PS2) fine on my PS3. Then, after leaving the disc in for two days but not playing it (but still using the PS3, messing around with pictures, video, and internet), I decided to play it again, and it wouldn't work. I pressed X on the PS2 format disc icon as usual, the screen turned black, and remained that way until I turned the power off on the back of the console. During this time, I could remove the disc, but hitting the PS button on the controller and the power button on the front of the console did nothing. I switched the disc out for Devil May Cry 3(PS2) and Final Fantasy X(PS2) and got the same response, but after switching to Metal Gear Solid 4(PS3) the system ran as usual.

Any time I put in a ps2 game, my screen goes blank and stays like that till I force the console off. It used to play ps2 games fine before about 2 weeks ago or something like that. This is the case even as my ps3 is updated to the latest firmware version. The ps3 works fine with ps1 and ps3 game only.

Since I had the problem, my PS3 has been playing PS2 games fine the few times I have played it. And my PS3 had been completely updated at the time of the problem as well as now.

I have the newest update installed and i still occassionally have that problem. It happened one time, and all i had to do was put in a ps3 game first...play that a little, and then eject the disc and put in a ps2 game...i dunno if it works all the time though...the ps3 has some bug where if you take out a ps2 game and replace it with another one, it'll stop reading and you just get the black screen. ironically, it doesn't have this problem any other time, not even with ps1 one games so far as i can tell.

You probably need to update the system via the internet. I had the same problem and called tech support at sony. The lady told me that an update had just been put out for the systems that should fix the problem. If they have to keep releasing new updates for these consoles, maybe we should all just smash them with hammers.

i looked further into, its usually from a corrupt hard drive aka emulator on hard drive. means you have been turning off the PS3 the wrong way. (i know thats my fault as well)

try this:
it works for slimline PS2. might work for PS3.
1) turn off PS3
2) unplug PS3 and wait a minute or two before plugging back in.
3) turn on PS3

hope this helps.

it could also be overheating.

PS3 is backwards compatible with PS2 games, and USED to play them

In Playstation Store, you should download (for free) the PS2 SYSTEM DATA (something like this).
if you have formated your system, the files were erased, and the games won't play until you download the backwards comparibility files again.

My PS3 will start to load Call Of Duty 5 then just goes blank..But will play other discs.Any Ideas?

When I had a similar issue with my PS2 (GT4 would not load) it was because the disk-reading laser was misaligned. That happened after using the system for many years, so if your system is new, maybe you can skip to the 2nd part of my answer. A slight misalignment could mean that the disk is still read, but the process takes longer. If COD5 requires frequent access to the disk when booting up - as GT4-, that might explain why other games load properly and COD5 doesn't.

Other potential problems: scratched disk (visible scratches), dirty disk (you can clean with a cloth, sweeping radially from the center to the border of the disk), problem with the COD5 data installed in your PS3 hard disk (try reinstalling the game).

GAMES WONT LOAD

The same problem happened to me yesterday, i was playing GTA IV then it suddenly stopped reading, and now i have a real hard time making one ps3 game work...the ps2 and psONE games work fine, but the ps3 ones dont load or take real hard work to make them load.

Is it a problem from a patch or a virus probably?

Ps2 on ps3 game problems

I also had this problem running PS2 games. I noticed that when it happened, my bluetooth remotes becames unpaired and could no longer be used to turn the PS3 on/off. Pressing the PS button would not interrupt the hung PS2 game (i.e., it would not give me the options to quit the game, turn the system/controller off, etc.). I talked with the Sony Playstation folks and they suggested resetting the bluetooth controllers (by poking the hole on the backside next to the screw hole). They said sometimes the bluetooth info gets honked. Just before this problem popped up, I was messing around with pairing a bluetooth headset and may have interrupted the pairing. You may have a similar situation, so try resetting your controllers. You may have to plug into the USB port if they won't re-pair after resetting (I did). Good luck!

PS2 Disk won't spin

what may have happened is that the saved files for GT4 on your memory card have now become corrupt, and the disk when put in the suysstem is trying to read the data from the card, simply deleting your saved GT4 data from the memory card should allow the disk to play as normal.
