Ps2 games were working fine on my ps3 however when i went to boot up GT4 on ps2 the other day the screen stayed blank after launching it from the menu and no sound or graphics appeared at all, even though i had been playing the same game just the day before. I tried other ps2 games and found the same problem. Ps3 games still work fine though!
Solved!!!at least in mine.. I found that the internal PS2 memeory card was corrupted..I deleted it and created a new one...problem solved!!! I lost all my saved games though..but still price worth paying to play my PS2 Games
I updated mine didnt work i was playing ffx the other night when i turned it off when down stairs for a while came bkup to play it and it still wont work and i tryed the ps3 game to ps2 game still didnt work so not fair i love that final fantasy i would say the lazer is just messed up and needs to be cleaned but i cant find a way to take the case off so sorry
I have the newest update installed and i still occassionally have that problem. It happened one time, and all i had to do was put in a ps3 game first...play that a little, and then eject the disc and put in a ps2 game...i dunno if it works all the time though...the ps3 has some bug where if you take out a ps2 game and replace it with another one, it'll stop reading and you just get the black screen. ironically, it doesn't have this problem any other time, not even with ps1 one games so far as i can tell.
You probably need to update the system via the internet. I had the same problem and called tech support at sony. The lady told me that an update had just been put out for the systems that should fix the problem. If they have to keep releasing new updates for these consoles, maybe we should all just smash them with hammers.

In Playstation Store, you should download (for free) the PS2 SYSTEM DATA (something like this). if you have formated your system, the files were erased, and the games won't play until you download the backwards comparibility files again.
When I had a similar issue with my PS2 (GT4 would not load) it was because the disk-reading laser was misaligned. That happened after using the system for many years, so if your system is new, maybe you can skip to the 2nd part of my answer. A slight misalignment could mean that the disk is still read, but the process takes longer. If COD5 requires frequent access to the disk when booting up - as GT4-, that might explain why other games load properly and COD5 doesn't.
Other potential problems: scratched disk (visible scratches), dirty disk (you can clean with a cloth, sweeping radially from the center to the border of the disk), problem with the COD5 data installed in your PS3 hard disk (try reinstalling the game).
i think i have a sali..salute...anser(i can not typ today srry) the this sorta hapend to me but i had anuther ps2 so i put the broken 1 away for a wile and then a bout a month later it started working again so its working to hard u need to stop useing your ps2 and let it cool down not
The same problem happened to me yesterday, i was playing GTA IV then it suddenly stopped reading, and now i have a real hard time making one ps3 game work...the ps2 and psONE games work fine, but the ps3 ones dont load or take real hard work to make them load.
I also had this problem running PS2 games. I noticed that when it happened, my bluetooth remotes becames unpaired and could no longer be used to turn the PS3 on/off. Pressing the PS button would not interrupt the hung PS2 game (i.e., it would not give me the options to quit the game, turn the system/controller off, etc.).
I talked with the Sony Playstation folks and they suggested resetting the bluetooth controllers (by poking the hole on the backside next to the screw hole). They said sometimes the bluetooth info gets honked. Just before this problem popped up, I was messing around with pairing a bluetooth headset and may have interrupted the pairing.
You may have a similar situation, so try resetting your controllers. You may have to plug into the USB port if they won't re-pair after resetting (I did). Good luck!
what may have happened is that the saved files for GT4 on your memory card have now become corrupt, and the disk when put in the suysstem is trying to read the data from the card, simply deleting your saved GT4 data from the memory card should allow the disk to play as normal.
