Question about GE WSXH208A Front Load Washer
I have been trying to get back to the "Buy USA theme, so I decided to buy a GE washer and dryer combo as the need arrived. Certainly not the cheepest choice, we picked a water saving, Energy Star rated GE brand. front load washer and dryer. A matching set. Since our purchase, we have needed to replace a plastic timer knob, at $29.00, yes I said $29.00!!! for a cheap ( in quality, not cost) plastic knob. Then the washer started swollowing up socks which went into the pump and stopped it up. It also began shredding delicates. It turns out that the paddles(called veins on the parts list)inside of the tub are made of ... you guessed it, cheap plastic. They began breaking apart leaving jagged edges and opening holes that let the small items like stockings exit the wash tub and go to the pump. Easy fix I thought. When I called GE for parts, they told me that these cheap, plastic, paddles were $47.00 each! That's right I said $47.00 each, for these thin, brittle plastic items that were made of the same thing that the plastic pencil tray in your desk is made of. Except GE thinks that $47.00 is a fair price for a cheap disposable item. That is the reward for loyalty. This washer that cost around $650.00 new, now would cost me $200.00 with service & labor to own and the items that were broken are not even mechanical friction parts. If these paddles would have been fairly priced, I would have just chalked their constant breaking to bad engineering and bought the new parts without much complaint. It sometimes happens even on the best equipment. But when you find an apparently badly designed part that is so blatantly overpriced, I immediately think that it's failure and it's extraordinary high replacement cost are both planned. They are PLASTIC disposable, breakable parts that were probably engineered to fracture and fall apart on que so as to increse the profit margine of a given appliance. I guess that is the reward that you get for buying their product. Here is the kicker! When you order the new parts they make sure that you know that these are GENUINE GE PARTS. They don't even care that they are proudly placing their name on parts that are disintegrating before your eyes. I think their loyalty to me for buying their product is to stick it to me when they have the planned oportunity. Well after my experience with GEs parts, I think I'll try the knock-off parts for a change, hopefully at a more reasonable price, however, I don't think I'll find after market parts because GE doesn't seem to continue a model long enough for an after market part to be manufactured. Your machine is probably obsolete before a competing company can make replacement parts for a "has been" washer.
Speaking of loyalty, While I am being a sucker, uh, er, I mean, a patriot and buying American, I read that GE is selling Hydro-electric generators to IRAN. The joke is on Iran though. Wait until they need some of the plastic parts for those generators. Iran will be as furious as I am.
In the late 70s there was a bill that passed the House and Senate called the Magnuson-Moss Act. (the Lemon Law) I will check to see if it applies to this situation, and get back with you.
Now after all of this ranting and raving, I think I know the answer to my question. Is there another supplier for these parts? Thank you
There are some aftermarket parts for some GE products, but probably nothing that you would need. I love GE units, the Profiles are some of my favorite washers and dryer, but I hate to go out on a service call to someone who has a issue with a GE unit. The parts are way over priced compaired to other makes and models. In fact, Whirlpool actually made some stack units for GE, if you look up the GE part, then the Whirlpool part, there was a huge difference in the parts price. Its a sham, pure and simple. One hint, if you can find the parts you need elsewhere, go for it. E-Bay has tons of parts for GE, as well as most other brands. Hope this helped a little. And remember "GE" stands for "Generally Expensive".
