How to connect a dryer

Hi Sheliah,

I'm an electrician and would like to help you. Assuming you're in the U.S. and this is an electric dryer (not gas), you will need to find a 240 (a.k.a. 250) volt / 30 amp circuit to connect it to for it to work. This would be connected to a double pole 30 amp circuit breaker in the electrical panel. There is no simple residential "adapter" to change voltage, current or number of wires - besides the old 3 wire grounding plug adapter in you grandmother's junk drawer. (What is a 50/250 volt dryer? - did you mean a 30A/250V?)

Your dryer should have a 4 wire cord with a 4 prong plug on the end - and it will need to be plugged into a matching outlet. The old electrical code allowed you to change the cord to match the outlet, but now it requires that both the cord and the outlet be a 4 wire type. The old 3 wire cord type is no longer permitted to be used when the dryer is moved or replaced. Of course, 3 wire cords are available everywhere and it is unlikely that anyone will turn you in for changing the dryer's 4 wire cord back to a 3 wire cord type (but I just wanted to tell they way it is supposed to be done). What you do - is your business.

If you have a gas (or LP) dryer, you probably only need a 120 volt / 15 or 20 amp outlet - they look like the standard types - but I think you'd have simply plugged it in and walked away if that were the case.

The green wire is a ground wire. 4 wire hook ups usually have a terminal with a hook or a 90 degree bent tab that one is the ground.

I have a jeep Wrangler 1989 2.5 (4C) and replaced the wires and plugs sue to the vehicle running rough at mid range.. this was to no avail I would like to check the firing order. Thank You

FIRING ORDERS NOTE: To avoid confusion, remove and tag the spark plug wires one at a time, for replacement. If a distributor is not keyed for installation with only one orientation, it could have been removed previously and rewired. The resultant wiring would hold the correct firing order, but could change the relative placement of the plug towers in relation to the engine. For this reason it is imperative that you label all wires before disconnecting any of them. Also, before removal, compare the current wiring with the accompanying illustrations. Hi,
The Red and Black wires go on the outsides, the White wire goes in the center and the Green wire gets screwed to the frame on the range.

It really is not very hard and you can also see on that site how to change the receptacle also if needed.

The middle wire on your new 3 prong range cord attaches to the middle post on your range. The other two wires can go to the two outside terminals, one to each post, it does not matter which wire. Make sure that you tighten the nuts or screws down very tight, as loose connections burn up in a short time. I shouldn't have to say this, but we had a customer try this with the power cord plugged in! Very, Very Dangerous! Do not plug your cord in until you have everything connected and your access panel reinstalled. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists.

Just to be clear on this, since there was a second answer. So far I have never seen a 4 post range terminal block, there have always been 3 posts and the 4th wire was connected to the case itself. I could be wrong on the newest models, but again I haven't seen this. This gives you 2 lines, a neutral and a ground for extra safety. The extra wire is the ground. Newer houses after 2000, or remodels with wiring changes are required to have a 4 wire house receptacle installed. Older houses are not required to change this even if the receptacle fails unless the house wiring to the range fails. Then you are required to change to 4 wire wiring and receptacles. The electrical codes for your town may be different but this is the National Electical Codes. So you are allowed to change to a 3 wire power cord on older homes, the downside is it is not as safe as rewiring your house range wiring and receptacle and circuit breaker. Don't change the plug. Change the receptical. All posts are required for the range to operate. If you don't use all the posts it could be dangerous to use your range and it will not operate properly.
The receptical should be replaced by a certifiad electrician.
