Question about Maytag Legacy Series Top Load Washer

MAYTAG LEGACY MODEL # SAV205DAWW

My problem has been the plastic agitator itself - this unit has some sort of a free floating or free agitating agitator that just slips on. Problem is that the agitator floats off and then the clothes do not move very much while in wash cycle. I can only slip the agitator back on - there doesn't seem to be a permenant way of keeping the agitator on the machine ( no bolts, or way of securing it on ). Can anyone help - else I have to throw the whole thing away.

I found out that there are two sections to their agitator - the bottom one is bolted on - howver the second ( top agitator part just floats off - since the plastic tips are worn away )

I have been going insane with this exact problem. Thanks for the idea to bend the tabs a little. I'll try it before I order the new part.

I've got the same problem. The diagram is a bit deceiving because it appears to show the agitator/auger as one piece. However, the bolt only holds the agitator (lower portion) and then the auger slips in place over that. The fabric softener cup then snaps to the top of the auger.

Best I can tell is that the slotted 'ears' on top of the agitator are worn thus preventing a secure fit between the agitator and auger. I just finished putting some hard thumb pressure on each of the ears and bent them outward some. The auger fits much tighter now and I'm doing a test run of clothes. It is holding but I will probably have to replace what they describe as the agitator / auger assembly, costs $53.54. I don't see any other fix but would appreciate further input.

Thanks

Same problem. I noticed that the upper portion was caked with fabric softener, inside and out. I let it soak in a bucket of very hot water to loosen it up. Then I had to scrub it. The fabric softener residue had become a lubricant and the upper portion just slides right off.

There is no bolt that holds the second part (upper portion of the agitator ) in place. It just slides over the bottom agitator part. The upper part has no way of attaching itself to the lower portion - it just slides on

There should be a bolt underneith the fabric softener assembly that holds the auger section and agaitator in place. Sending a link with a diagram.

If you still dont find the bolt (#14 on the diagram), give me a shout back and try to figure out something else. Good Luck!!

You need to purchase the repair kit for the agitator, they are called agitator dogs. You just need to pop the top off the agitator and you can then look down inside the agitator and see the problem.Hope this helps.

The agitator doesn't rotate aggressively. I popped the center cap and it appears that the plastic paws have broken partially off and are not engaging the geared ring, but rather just slipping over it.

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

If the bottom agitates and not the top, the problem is likely the 4 "agitator dogs" designed to allow the top agitator to turn only one way.

Look at the section on the Sears site for Agitator, basket and tub.

See the part "Dog, agitator "

Remove the fabric softener unit, lift the top agitator cap (use a screwdriver) and you should see a plastic part in the center of the top agitator with a 1/2" square drive.

Remove the drive and lift off the top agitator. Turning it over you should see the 4 "dogs", replace these and the top agitator should turn in one direction only.

Replace the 1/2" drive, the cap and fabric softener unit and the top agitator should work.

Also see the following illustrated description of the above.

The top section of a two part agitator is designed to turn only one way. If the "agitator dogs" in it are worn, it wont agitate either way.

Look at the section on the Sears site for Agitator, basket and tub.

Top part of agitator is loose and wobbles and

These are called "dogs" and they are replaceable and do not cost much. Basically, they keep the agitator locked in position when the shaft moves in an oppisite direction so the agitator can step forward.

They should be fairly simple to remove with a phillips screwdriver or a 1-4 in nut driver. take them to a reputable appliance parts store and they will be able to sell you replacements.

These are made to wear out and be replaced so the agitator itself doesnt wear, which is a whole different story to replace. Left-handed shaft screw. Undo it in a clockwise direction and slide the agitator off the shaft if you find that replacing the dogs does not work.

Agitator doesn't agitate

Hi. your agitator has a drive shaft and a shift link inside that uses plastic gears as well. all this is attached to the drive assembly and transmission clutch assembly. the main issue here is that the clutch and transmission has stripped the agitator kit. you will need to replace or order a new agitator kit and clutch for this unit.

Removing agitator hoover 800EL

The following advice is for replacing the “Agitator Dogs” on Kenmore and Whirlpool TOP LOADER style washing machines. This simple repair can save you a fortune in repair costs as the replacement parts are very inexpensive at a cost of less than $10. The replacement kit part number is 80040. You can order on line at various appliance parts websites, or use this part number and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer.

What are “Agitator Dogs”? These are small plastic pieces (usually 4) that are located under the agitator center cap that grip the agitator and turn it during the wash cycle. They can (and do) wear out dependent upon the use of the washer. If you are in the habit of doing large load sizes frequently, or wash large items such blankets or afghans, this can wear the teeth off and reduce the life of the agitator dogs.

SYMPTOMS REQURING REPLACEMENT: The agitator fails to turn during the wash cycle, or will not turn with a heavy load. The timer will run normally through all cycles, and you will be able to hear the gearcase (transmission) engage and run. The washer will also drain normally. The only indication that something is wrong will be the agitator slipping or not turning at all. The result will be clothes that do not wash properly and will sit on the bottom of the wash tub.

To replace the Agitator Dogs, follow these steps:

1.Remove the agitator center cap by either pulling straight up or gently placing a flat blade screwdriver into a slot located in the cap.
2.If the agitator is equipped with an inner cap with a handle, remove this as well by pulling straight up.
3.Remove the center bolt of the agitator. You will have either a 7/16” hex bolt or a recessed square plastic nut. If you have the square recessed type, use a 3/8” to ½” ratchet adapter to remove.
4.Remove the agitator by grasping the bottom flange and carefully pulling straight up. Try to keep all the parts assembled while doing this, so do not pull too hard. This will make this repair much easier.
5.Place your hand over the top of the agitator and separate the upper portion of the agitator from the lower portion and turn the top half over in your hand. The agitator dog assembly will come out in your hand.
6.With the agitator dog assembly in your hand, lay the rest of the agitator aside. Pay careful attention to how the dogs are installed. Remove the worn dogs and reinstall new ones. It’s that simple.
7.With all the dogs replaced and the assembly still in your hand, place the upper part of the agitator over the top of it, upside down, ensuring the inner assembly tabs align correctly.
8.Now keep your hand over the agitator top to hold all the pieces together and turn the entire assembly over (upright position).
9.Carefully align and reinsert the upper portion of the agitator to the lower portion. Again, making sure the two pieces align correctly.
10.Place the entire agitator assembly back on the gearcase shaft and reinstall center nut. NOTE: DO NOT over tighten the nut, or the agitator will not spin correctly. Just make the nut snug. Reinstall center cap and inner cap (if equipped).

These instructions should give you the basics on how to perform this repair. Since there are various agitator types in use by Whirlpool and Kenmore, assembly can vary.

Washer will not agitate but will spin

It sounds like the plastic inside the agitator cog are worn. The smell is the plastic cog turning but the agitator not turning.

Take off the top of the agitator. If any screw are available remove them. If not grab the agitator from the bottom and yank off. Unscrew the agitator drive cog and inspect underside of agitator. Go to an appliance repair shop and reorder a new one. Between $15-30.
