Question about Brother MFC-8460N All-In-One Printer
Hey I figured it out. On the top where you insert paper into the automatic document feeder you will notice a small switch. When paper is set in the tray the switch is pressed down. I noticed on mine that the switch had become stuck down. I just used a small push-pin and popped it up. Error message went away.

There must still be a piece of paper in the machine check the fuser section at the rear of the machine maybe be piece there or check at the paper cassette area remove cassette and check that the paper hasn't got jammed as it feeds through.

I had the same problem. (The screen said that there is a "Document Jam, clear the scanner jam and then press stop". Their was no document jam. Since my machine is no longer under warranty, I undertook the problem myself. After trying different things, I just happened to have the machine set on its right side while I pressed the stop button continuously. When the cooling fan started up, I set it upright and the problem was solved. It has something to do with the automatic document feeder (ADF) mechanism. Just because it says "Document Jam" does not mean that there is in fact a paper jam.

I had the same problem with a Brother MFC-8460 and called Brother's support line. The solution that worked for me was to lift the top cover where the sheets of paper go through when you fax. On the right of the black rectangluar piece with grey roller there is a slot in the tray with a black lever inside. The black piece was stuck down inside the slot and had to be popped back out. Once it was out I hit the stop button and it was fixed!!
