I'm assuming your using XP, but are you using burning software? Have you tried any other brand of cd/dvd. I you've tried these things, more than likely it's your burner.

Pavilion 533w cannot read dvd from DVD ROM drive but CAN read CDs. A restore of Windows XP was performed using HP's non-destructive recovery option.

The combo uses two lasers - one for the dvd and the other for the cd. If the unit works perfectly on cd and at all on dvd then the dvd laser has died and the entire unit with it, it can't be fixed. Buy a new dvd writer and junk the old one.

Dvd drive will read/play dvds but will not recognize a cd

go to safemode and try reading CDs in safemode. If your burner still can't read CDs then it's most likely bad. You could get an external usb burner.

CD DVD drive won't read application disks like Photoshop, Vegas

Either they put in a bad mother board or damaged yor DVD drive. Maybe they even put in the wrong unit. In any case I'd send it back to them.

DVD/CD writer

This is a common problem on HP laptops. Try updating the firmware on the DVD drive by searching on the web for the make and model number of the HP laptop and going from there.

Good luck...
