Vivitar V2800GX tripod with sticky head

I would like to replace the head and post of this tripod with an oversize plate. Something to give more stability for a fairly heavy camera.

SOURCE: Benbo 1 ball head sticky

"NeverSeeze" available at most hardware and auto parts stores.  A little (very Little) goes a long way.  Smear a small amount on the ball and start to work it around in its socket. will come out as new with a little effort.

SOURCE: Removing Tripod head from center post on Manfrotto Modo 785B

I have the national geographic branded version. Here is how you remove the head.

(1) remove the center post from the tripod
(2) lock the ball head with the trigger lock
(3) grasp the body of the ball head with one hand and the center column with the other.
(4) turn counter clockwise.

If you're intending to replace the ballhead, be warned that the thread is non-standard. I have a new "plug" with a standard 1/4" thread made for free by the machinist at my job. I don't know how you would go about adapting it without such a capability.

Ineed a tilt head for vivitar 914 tripod

Because of the age of the tripod, and the fact that Vivitar no longer sells or supports tripods, I think you would be better served if you bought a new tripod. Slik and Manfrotto are two that will offer you a great price, durability and in the case of the Manfrotto, parts available from a wide range of sources including the USA distributor: www.bogenimaging.us you can see tripod and parts at www.BogenTripodParts.com Otherwise you could try ebay or craigs list to find the same model and use it for parts.

The quick release tab is on the top but there is no plate for a camera to mount on to...guess it's lost. no serial number on the tripod. Brushed aluminum legs and it's got to be about 8 or 9 years old. Can...

Unfortunately not. It's a budget, no-name model with absolutely no back up support so you have no chance of buying a replacement quick release plate. The plates themselves are not standardised and are not only unique to each manufacturer but often not even standard within a single manufacturer's product range.

You'll only get the kind of support you're after from established brands such as Velbon, Slik, Benbo, Manfrotto to name just a few.

If the basic tripod is still solid though you can usually unscrew the head from the tripod and replace it from another one (doesn't usually have to be the same make/model) which has suffered leg damage. To remove the head on most models you tighten the locking screw which prevents the head from panning and then turn the head firmly counter-clockwise. The screw thread which holds the head assembly is usually a universal one.

If you have ALDI or LIDL stores in your country they regularly sell surprisingly good tripods with a no-quibble three year international warranty for around £10. They come complete with a carry bag and spare quick release plate. Neither company has any at the moment but they regularly reappear in their weekly specials listings.

I hope that you've found this posting to be of some help even though it's undoubtedly disappointing news. Please return the favour by rating my answer.
