Double images, error 5100 when printing, copying

My Canon MX700 multi-function printer gives error 5100. Before that, during printing, lines on a document keep shifting right (or left), and sometime "ghost" shadow images appear here and there. All kinds of cleaning and print head alignment procedures did not help.

Since the same issue has been seen when printing from different desktop PCs running different versions of Windows, as well as when copying documents, I conclude that this is the printer itself.

Thanks, assistencia! I did clean the timing strip the best I could without taking the printer apart. I also checked for any obstructions (nothing really). However, the problem still persists. Could this be then the reading part (somewhere on the print head) of the timing mechanism? If so, what would I look for to clean that?

5100 is a carriage error, check the timing strip for contamination(plastic strip about 1/4" in width)
The unit is not homing, check for obstructions.

Error code 5100 has appeared

Here is what I could find on the issue. -Error code 5100 describes a physical problem either with a paper jam or an incorrectly seated ink tank.

I have canon mp145 printer. when it starts to print it gives the service error 5100 message

Tried greasing (actually WD40) per linzi's reply, but it did not help. In the process, I think the solution presented itself. There is a thin (1/4"wide) plastic strip running across the width in front of and below the drive belt. This is part of the optical encoder that tells the print-head where it is. If you look closely, there are fine black vertical lines on this strip. If the strip gets a piece of crud on it, you get an error during the start-up sequence. Gently clean this strip with a damp lint-free tissue. This also fixed a gap in the printing running lengthwise (not across the page like a clogged head).

Error code 5100 on mx700 printer

Canon MX700 multi-function printer error 5100, double-lines

You can Try
Solution 1:
Clean the timing strip.

Solution 2:
The purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) may be not lubricated well enough .

Lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps); this repair probably require to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism.

Error code 5100

5100 means either there is paper stopping the carriage from moving properly, or there is grease on the plastic strip behind the carriage. If you wipe off the grease with a Q-tip the error will go away.
