Re: HP1220c only prints red or black
Remove the ink cartrdges and clean the carriage (cartridge holder) with rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth. You need to clean the metal contact plates. Wipe down the contact plates on any cartridge you put be in after and be sure all parts are dry before you put them back in.

Try printing a light stripes test page (Troubleshooting, print quality problems, troubleshooting print quality page).
If you do not appear to have many missing jets but the colours are all just wrong it may be that the ink has gone stale. Run a couple of head cleans and you should see the colours start to improve. If it is getting better, all you can do is keep running head cleans until you have replenished all the ink in the printhead well. This problem is common in situations where a lot of black and white printing is done, with very little colour. Alternatively, it could be that your wiper/cleaning blade is not cleaning the head properlyand is smearing the different coloured inks across the head, or possibly that yourprinthead is leaking colours but I think the first solution should solve your problem. Hope this helps.
To customer of HP deskjet 990cki: I purchased the HP photosmart Plus B209 ~ January 2010. 3 months into, I have learned that when the color ink that you don't use evaporates, the black ink will not work at all, no matter what you adjust or clean. To make it work you have to purchase more color ink...on & on & on..$$$$. Neither HP nor Best Buy will refund my investment. Spoken with HP customer service reps. in the Philippines & Canada both being outside of the US. NO customer satisfaction. No refunds. I suggest Boycotting both corps.
Hi maryryherd - yes the C64 is in the list - don't know why you couldn't see it.
The inkjet colour system can be quite confusing. The colours in the cartridges are cyan, magenta and yellow, plus black. Other colours require a mixture of these basic ones. For example, to produce "red" requires a mixture of magenta and yellow. Your problem sounds like you are getting insufficient yellow, and maybe insufficient black.
Have you tried a cleaning cycle? If not, try one (right click the little printer icon in the bottom right corner of the screen and select head clean). Now run a nozzle check (right click the little printer icon in the bottom right corner of the screen and select nozzle check). Are all the 3 colour bands plus black printed OK. If not, try up to three cleaning cycles. If ink is now flowing pretty well, but not yet perfectly, don't carry out any more cleaning cycles. Just leave the printer for 24 hours (to allow any air in the print head to disperse). Then repeat the cleaning cycle/wait process. It may take a while to restore a perfect nozzle check print. If these actions produce no positive results, report back with a new comment.
Your printer creates it's black by using ALL the colours together. This effectively gives a very dark purple rather than black.
It sounds like you have a colour cart that is drying up or may be struggling to get enough air into the cartridge. Make sure you have removed any tape over the vent holes if you are using compatible inks. If not then try running a couple cleaning cycles via the button panel/driver.
If you alter the settings in the driver by going into START - PRINTERS AND FAXES and then right click on your 2610 and select PROPERTIES - the changes you make in here will be set as the default settings for each print job.
