Question about Acer Aspire 3680 Laptop
Hi The Joat, what about the "bios boot start up password" on Acer 4920.
How to reset the password, in case of stolen laptop or forgotten bios password? As what we know, for acer models,
they have a special chip bypass that resets the bios password. According to Acer, only the owner and manufacturer can crack/reset the password. Is there anyone can crack the password??

First, if you need to enter BIOS, not all laptops use F2 as a key. Some use DEL, some use F12, and some use key combos. There is a way to find out. If you have a "brand name" screen (like "Acer", "IBM", "NEC" etc) that comes up at boot, just hit ESC quickly, as soon as the ad appears, to escape that screen, and go direct to black screen post. At the BOTTOM of the black screen it will USUALLY tell you what key to press to enter BIOS. Must be done quickly!
Next, If this was indeed about the BIOS security password (that is required at boot time) then it is very unlikely it can be disabled by any BIOS selection. Modern laptops are very rigid about this, to discourage theft. The only possible way to reset a password on such a laptop is to locate and disconnect the PRAM/ROM or clock battery. This is a small button/wafer-type battery (or 2-3 button batteries shrink-wrapped together). Often this battery is located under the RAM or WIFI card, in one of the ports beneath the laptop. Two cautions: First, if the password is stored in "voltage independent flash memory part of BIOS instead of "voltage dependent memory", then you will not be able to reset the password. Only the dealer can do it under these circumstances, and sometimes, even they cannot succeed. Regardless, they will require proof of ownership to provide this service (again, as an anti-theft measure). Secondly, If the battery is not in the two locations I mentioned above, then the laptop is designed to prevent you from doing this unless you disassemble it, to reach the motherboard where the tiny batteries are hidden.

If you mean the BIOS password that comes up in the first few screens, then you will have to Disable the password in the BIOS utility. To open the BIOS utility, press F2 during the logo screen.
Then go to the Password screen and disable it.
To reset the windows logon password, you will need a boot disc such as "UBCD4Win" . Boot from the disc and use the password recovery utility on the disc to reset the pass word or to create another user without a password to start the computer from.
