I will assume you have windows xp, since you did not state with OS you are using. Is the sound turned up on the volume control? On the volume control make sure both the wave and master volume are correctly set.

If you do not know how to open the volume control, goto start, then click run, not type "sndvol32".

If this is not the case then you are having driver issues with your sound card. Make sure the sound drivers are installed and configured.

First check the volume control then check the drivers.

Even with vista, trouble-shooting should be the same, check the volume and then check the driver.

here is a website I found:

    http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows...

To change anything with the drivers, you need to login as admin.

That website is very good, and should be all you need to trouble-shoot your issue.

I do not have vista, can not afford it yet, but I hope to have it on one of my computers before the end of the year.

I don't think it liked my link post. I went to google and did a search on "vista sound issues". The top search result is that microsoft website:

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

HOW CAN I IMPROVE SOUND LEVEL ON MY LAPTOP WHEN STREAMING TV SHOWS FROM INTERNET?

Buy a set of speakers that plug into your usb port. Try Tiger Direct at: http://www.tigerdirect.com

When the site comes up just type: USB Speakers for Laptop in the search box and type GO. When the results are returned sort them by Price Low to High. They are as low as $9.99.

Below is a link to the speakers directly.

The voices on DVDs are too low and are drowned out

The centre channel normally has the voices - sounds like it:
  • isn't connected,
  • isn't working or
  • is turned down too far
  • or the system could be faulty

On some dvds only some of the sound track is audible, but no dialog can be heard. Some dvds work fine, but on most rented dvds part of the sound is missing.

on the 5.1 mode, 5 speakers are needed to hear everything. You can usually go in the sound setup menu of the dvd and chooses 2.1 english version. Also, on some receiver, they can be set at 5.1 and actually all of the 5 speakers might not be actually hookup. You can change the ''surround'' mode of the receiver to stereo...

No human sounds when playing dvds.

sound like the center channel is out
either bad connection at speaker or receiver is not putting out sound on center. A quick swap of speakers at receiver end will tell you if it is the latter
