Hi you are right this is common fault what needs replacing is the convergance ics theirs 2 of them but whils replacng these you will need any resistors checking for damage also as when the ics start to fail then its usually because a resistor has blown somewhere on the board causing the power to rise or fall and this causes the ics to fail

If you are going to do this yourself then you will need to find the shematics for your model number as you will need to check the voltage at certain points on the board and also to check any resistors that might need replacing.
If you can do this yourself and have relevant equipment like multimeter and good soldering iron then you can find the schematics online using ask.com and type in your tv make and model followed by schematics once you locate this you will then be able to get the part numbers that you need.
The cheapest way of getting the parts would be through a web site also use ask.com and type in the part numbers then this will locate the places that stock and sell the parts you need.
The price of the resistors are nothing they are reall cheap maybe couple of $ but the ic could cost between 20 and 50 dollars.each
If you have trouble locating schematics let me know and i will have a look when i finish work for you would be a couple of hours so let me know ok speak soon

Just tonight we were watching TV and the screen got darker. Picture is still fine, just got darker, on some channels the top and bottom center bow in toward the center a little, easy fix or a lot of...

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2
Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

You can see some more examples and find a fix herebb0cf99.pnghttp://www.fixya.com/support/r2861467-solution_video_looking_whiteish_dull

Panasonic pt-47wx49E instantly scattered color blue to the left of the image on the screen.

If you have gone into the customer menu and CONVERGENCE is skewed and will not adjust:

One or both of the two STK-392-110 convergence chips that this set uses are bad.

The chips are about 2 1 /2 inches wide by 1 1/2 inches tall and are black in color. They are mounted on metal heat sinks2.gif with fins and are side by side--they will have the Stk-392-110 number printed on them in white letters.

If you locate them take a good look at all the light blue resistors in front of them--most are marked 2.2 ohms---look for any that are white or discolored in the middle---if you find one or more YOU HAVE FOUND YOUR PROBLEM.

BOTH chips and any bad resistors need to be replaced and the set adjusted. If you can do this repair you can save a lot of money as you can buy both chips (a pair) on Ebay for about 12 dollars plus shipping2.gif.

I have start to finish instructions for this repair on this type of set.

If you cannot do this repair yourself, shop around your area--most shops charge 300-400 for this kind of repair--I do them here for 200-250 and have done hundreds of them.

If they say it has to go to the shop--keep looking as any good tech can do this repair in your home in about 1 hour.

Sounds like your convergence chips are going. Unless you are real handy with soldering iron I would suggest having a tv repair shop service it(probably cost $200-300). If you are handy then I believe the chips you need are Sanyo STK392-110. There should be 2 of them. be careful if you order them online, there are lots of chinese knock-offs out there.

Have you checked the lamps. Rear projection TV's have bright lamps, that can burn out. If you have had this TV for a while, that is the first thing I would check. If you still have to manual, it should tell you how to check the lamps and which ones you need to order.

These should be special lamps only Panasonic sells. Therefore they might cost a few bills.

Your TV most likely has a Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together convergence repair kits for most models.

The kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, etc. Everything you will need to do the repair yourself.
