The topic is - Cobra 148 GTL - TX problem

  • tartaruga Feb 01, 2008

Hello! In the first thank you for the answer.

The s/meter does not work when I press the ptt.
I connect the watmetter in output and has no sign.
I know that PLL is ok I listened in another cb on the same frequency and heard a small carrier when the press ptt.
The PA active when press the PTT but not hear the audio of the microphone.

    Excuse me the bad English
    Thank you for your help

Ok now PA works, I hear the sound of the mic.
Final transístor, driver and pre driver are ok.
I am now to check the voltages of other transistors with the information obtained in factory service manual on pages 16-30.

    Thank you for your answers

Good advice chiaflub67. The voltage for the RF metering function of the S/RF meter is produced by a detector diode that samples a portion of the output signal from a RF coupler circuit. I was also thinking a pre-driver / driver issue as well. As for the PLL, the modulation of the RF carrier occurrs "after" the PLL generation and is accomplished by the modulator circuit - not in the PLL circuit itself. let us know how its going.

Have you tried another mic?? You said you tried it on another reciever . It may also be the keying Diode I'll find a location # for you. Try using an external speaker plugged into the PA port in the rear put radio on PA make Sure the mic gain is turned up then try to key the mic and talk If you have sound then the audio amp is fine check and make sure the voltages are correct on all components go to www.cbtricks.com under radio info you can download the factory service manual on pages 16-30 youll find a voltage chart check your voltages if any are off then go from there. If the final or the driver both check good also check the pre driver I hope this helps....Good luck Dean

When you press the PTT do you see the meter deflect on the S/RF meter? Have you put a wattmeter on the output? If so, is there any defection on the wattmeter? I'm sure you probably tried transmitting on this radio whiile listening for it on another CB. Perhaps there is something wrong in the keying circuit. The keying circuit receives the command (usually a pull down to ground) from the microphone and operates a transistor that enables (turns on) a RF stage or RF stages, causing the transmitter to transmit. How did you determine the PLL & RF chain were ok? Just curious.

The PLL will still use a crystal oscillator for a reference. Is there a LO oscillator?

Please let me know if you find out anything. I'd like to help you all I can.

    Good luck!

Good day I have an cobra 148 Gtl tx and rx a working but no out put

It might not seem obvious but on many, if not all, current CB radios have separate wires coming from the microphone for RX and TX. It seems like the mic wire for TRANSMIT may be open. It is a common failure.

148 gtl cobra cb radio and the rx/tx light stay on

This sounds like a problem with the MB3756 Regulator IC. It controls voltage regulation and TX/RX Switching. It is a common failure in these radios. Check voltages with schematic that can be found at

Cobra 1000 will not receive or transmit.

Sounds like a problem with the VCO / PLL Circuit since nothing happens in RX or TX. Check to make sure you have the correct supply voltages to start with and also check to see if you have 10.240Mhz. Use the service manual and go through the PLL/VCO alignment section. If anything is missing then you at least know where to look.

Cobra 148 gtl-st wont transmit but receives great

Check first your microphone

• check if TX is engaging when PTT is pushed.

• check for continuity ( mic and cable )

If you have not done these steps,

try it first, or borrow other compatible mic for Cobra 148GTL

from your friends on air.

No transmit on 148gtl

First is check to see if SSB transmits or not==if it does the AM regulator on side wall of radio is bad.

Second with a meter and no power on--test the driver and final for shorts or open.

If one is bad replace both.

let me know what you find.

Cobra 148fgtl low power on am/ssb no swing all finals ok

try adjusting the L36,L38 to the highest reading on the external meter and then adjust VR10 TO 4 watts. If this doesn't cure the problem, you have a weak final transistor. Good Luck

Cobra 148 gtl

First off check to see if your mic gain is turned all the way down. Second; if you have a power mic is the battery dead ir the volume of the mic turned down. If these check ok, look for a loose or broken audio wire in your microphone, and the connector (both ends can break). I have seen the wires break as far back as 4 inches from the mic head and the connector depending on how the user held the microphone, or pulled against the wire. if the problem is not found to be any of the above I suggest you take the radio to a qualified technician for repair.

i am having this trouble as well. The ics was my thought too, but I think it is in the modulation circuit somewhere. another article i read said to check this. "Look for the collector of TR-23, you should read about 4.5 V with a dead key. If you find that this voltage is not present, check on the opposite side of R-120 for 6.5V. Most likely this voltage will not be present; if this is the case, C18 has shorted and needs to be replaced. This is a 330uf, 10V electrolytic capacitor beside L31. To prevent "future" problems, replace with a 16V unit." As of yet, i havent gotten that far. note this is from the cobra 2000, but they are very much alike. you might cross check the resistor capacitor numbers though. btw, isnt the mb3756 the pll ic?
