CD driver disappear after running Windows update

The DVD works fine after installing Windwos Vista on a new PC. But after running Windows Update the DVD disappear!
The DVD comes back if I make a system restore to a point before running Windwos Update.
No other programs than the operationg system is installed on the PC.

Yes, but how to know which of all the updates is hte responsible? For me it seems that Dell have a big problem here. Some update from Microsoft ruins their PC :-(

Hi there

first read the updates that windows downloads before installing it to your computer. do a custom install. there might be an issue with one of the windows update with your dvd. its a good thing that you have system restore.

well, you can search specifically which is not compatible update for your computer by clicking on each update and unchecking it if its not, it may take a long time though. so, alwas update using custom settings.

DVD drive Read problem in my Dell Dimension 3000

Make sure you have any and all Windows 7 updates from Microsoft, along with any updates for your DVD drive for use with Windows 7. Some components work fine using Vista SP2 drivers, but some will need an update to work with Windows 7.

This Microsoft site might help verify if your DVD drive is compatible with Windows 7:

No driver after reboot

Alas, driver to what. It always helps to state device, brand, model, operating system in a query.

Here is some information. No way for me to narrow it to the relevant device. Don't know what that is!

Some versions of Windows 7 have an XP Mode. The driver that ran perfectly under XP may do so there. That Windows 7 Home Premium is 64 bit may be a factor if the vanishing driver ran under a 32 bit XP system.

Windows Vista doesn't recognize cable

XP & Vista require different drivers to run hardware devices.
Visit the Vista compatibility site to determine if your hardware is compatible, by clicking here,
or visit the manufacturer's website to see if there are updated drivers and firmware available for Vista that you can download and install.
Another possibility is to visit Windows Update and run a custom scan with the cable attached and see if you are offered a hardware update for your system that would make it work, but this seems unlikely in the case of a cable...
Good luck!

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
