Elna Carina Zig'Zag Stitch Issue

Hello,

I own an Elna Carina sewing machine that is about 25 years old. It has always worked fine and I had it cleaned and checked out for the first time about four years ago. The technician said it barely needed servicing because I had maintained it so well. I have not used it all that much since then. The problem I am experiencing is with the zig-zag stitch. If I stitch one stitch at a time it works fine with the properly set length and width. However, when I begin to stitch faster, the zig-zag almost disappears into a striaght stitch. This is a first for me. Any suggestions???

    Hello again,

I'm sorry I inadvertantly hit the "Thanks for Trying" rating thinking I was rating the previous response to my inquiry. It actually rated you when I this is not what I intended.

Anyway, your description seems to fit my situation. You advised using methylated spirit. Would denatured alcohol work in lieu of the methylated spirit?

    Thanks

Ia cannot change the stitch length on my elna su star series 62, the slider is very stiff.

  • Anonymous Mar 24, 2014

    stitch length will not reengage

  • Anonymous Mar 24, 2014

no change in stitch length because the bearing is too tight

Elna su stitch length shaft is stiff

The stitch length and width setting is starting to be non-responsive. I can select stitches and patterns. OK. Sometimes the stitch length/width goes to the next screen and then sometimes I can make adjustments - but it is delayed or takes several touches or tries.
    Can I fix this?

I have moved the special stitches and length modifiers and I can not get the machine back to the right settings for the zig zag. I have ordered a manual for the machine but I need to zig zag now.

Over time, and especially when not used, there is a likelihood of dust and old oil forming a sort of glue, or clag....

Remove the needle for safety, then, when you have the setting on Zig zag, gently push the needle arm to the opposite side of the zig stitch.......release the needle arm, and if it springs back quickly, it is fine, if it moves slowly, or almost not at all, then the clag needs removing with application of few drops of methylated spirit to start, at the sort of piston affair that shifts needle arm L & R .....move the needle arm back & forth until it frees up, a drop of oil to finish.........if almost seized, may require leaving overnight after using a penetrating lubricant if it is really resistant....I have had them on the bench for 3 days with manual manipulation a few times each day before they finally come good.

    Hi,

Denatured alcohol is fine, surgical spirit too, different countries have different names or products, essentially alcohol with few impurities that will evaporate quickly with little residue.

Hope this does work for you, tho' as I said, it may take a little time to penetrate depending on severity........the same applies to the reverse mechanism of many machines when they seize.

    Cheers

Elnas are still being sold although no longer made in Switzerland. Parts are available for the older Swiss machines. Any reputable sewing machine mechanic should be able to service and retime your Elna.

To find a dealer you can try www.elna.com, go to your country, then the Contact Us page and ask them for details of a local Elna dealer to you.

Or search yellow pages "sewing machine repairs" , find whose close, give them a ring and ask if they know your model.

I would like to know what stitch number to put my sewing machine onto to stitch stretch material. I have a Elna 40 sewing machine regards Judy

Looks like stitch #06 might be a stretch stitch. You could probably also use a slight 08 or 09 zig-zag. Unless you are sewing something really stretchy (lycra) IMHO, a slight zig-zag is fine and actually is a lot faster than a stretch stitch which takes a few stitches forward and then one or two stitches in reverse. The stitch #09 is something that I use frequently for stretch fabrics.

Elna machine puckers silk on zig zag stitching, Elna 2007

Yes, because a zig zag stitch is creating a wide stitch and the tension on the thread is going to pull the fabric within the seam together, you can't seam thin fabric with a wide zig zag. It will "tunnel together". If you are using this stitch to neaten a raw edge, then try using the serpentine or three step zig zag where the needle pierces the fabric 3 times in each leg of the zig zag, this will give better results.

Set zig zag stitch on Elna Elina 40

I have looked but can't see a manual, but looks like push button stitch selection on front of machine, often it will be same as straight stitch, but need to take stitch width from 0 to 4

Raw edge zig zag stitch bunching underneath

When zig zagging over a raw edge, the tension on the thread will pull in the fabric, especially in lightweight cottons or even lighter organza. Its not the best edging method for very light weight fabrics. You can try using a smaller zig zag, loosening off the top tension a little bit. Or if your machine has it, use the triple zig zag or serpentine stitch, where the needle goes through the fabric three times to make up each zig stitch, this stitch is better for edging most fabrics and is my preferred stitch.

I have and Elna su sewing machine and i can't get it to zig zag. Please refresh my memory on the settings i should have it on.

Depends on which SU you have, but you need to move the stitch selector to Zig Zag, then set the stitch length to 2.5 and the stitch width to at least 2.

On the earlier models the stitch selector is a wheel inside the flap on the top of the machine, on the air electronics, it is a coloured dial.

If this doesn't help, check if you've inadvertently moved the needle position to the side setting.

You are very welcome.....if you would like to re-vote accordingly, I guess this is another opportunity !

For those coming later to review the solution, somehow this post went off topic from the original exchange regarding an Elna with a reluctant Zig Zag motion caused by a sticking of the mechanism
....for anyone else with a similar issue, have a look here for advice on cleaning a slow or sticking zig zag mechanism
