Can't register my garmin nuvi 1690! Went online, gave code nuber for my device, conected the USB cable to computer...then it says wait while Communicator Plug in searches for your devices???? Then nothing happens after that... Claudine

Go online to Garmin.com and download the "Garmin Home" app.
Install in your computer, fire it up and connect your devise with the proper USB cable and your machine should automatically send you back to Garmin and ask you if you'd like to Register' you device now or later. Pick "Now".
This will allow you all updates and features you paid for.

You register your GPS using the Garmin Express program from Garmin. Down load and install the program, then connect your GPS to your PC. The program will prompt you to register the GPS.

Go to the Garmin website and register and update you unit. I will attach a link to the site below.

The screen your describe on your Garmin Nuvi is quite normal. It's the PC communication mode of the Nuvi. When disconnected from the PC it will automatically restart.

To update Nuvi software and maps - connect the Garmin to a PC / Mac using an USB cable. Then start your web browser (Internet Explorer / Firefox or similar) and go to MyGarmin.com.

To update the Garmin - MyGarmin.com will check if your webbrowser has been installed with the Garmin update plugin. If not it will say so and will lead you through the procedure to install the Garmin web browser plug-in.

After the web browser plugin is installed it will ask you for your Username and Password at MyGarmin.com. If not registered, then register yourself with the serial number of the Garmin Nuvi.

From here it's possible to update your Garmin Nuvi with new Nuvi software and maps using your username / password at MyGarmin.com

To connect the Garmin 255w you will need a usb cable. If you don't have one that came with it you can check all your other electronic devices like camera, camcorder,mp3 player etc..( my mp3 player usb cable worked fine). Carefully and gently try each one. One you get a usb cable connect it directly to a usb port on your computer and not thru a usb hub. then go over to the Garmin site and register the unit and download Garmin updater to update your unit. Registration of your nuvi is done online. You go to the garmin nuvi website, then register it from there. To register your nuvi, these are the steps to follow:

1. Connect your gps device to a computer using your USB cable,
2. Go to garmin website,
3. Select 'support' a list will pop out,
4. Select 'Product registration',
5. A page will pop up for you to enter a user name and password, that is if you already have an account with garmin, but if you do not, create a new account by clicking on the Create account link.
6. Then you enter your account information,
7. Install the garmin communicator plug in2,
8. It will ask for your products information, enter it and your device will be registered.

After registration, the communicator plug ins will be already installed on your nuvi. That is how you get your garmin nuvi registered.

Your Nuvi should be Off before connecting....

My Nuvi came with a patch cord that connects from Nuvi to laptop
its a usb cord, same usb cord you find for cameras

Your computer should see that a usb cable is connecting

I had the same problem. What caused it was the cable I bought at Radio Shack. I fit into the slot at the back of the device and into a usb outlet. But it was not a usb cable despite this. It was a battery charger. My computer did not detect the device though it recharged its battery. As soon as I purchased a usb cable at Radio Shack that connected to the same outlets as the charger, I was able to register.

I have the problem solved I at first had this problem after about 5 minutes of messing with my GARMIN NUVI and having many electronic gadget I thought about diffrent buttons to hit at the same time heres how you charge your NUVI with a computer and a usb cable

1st: make sure your NUVI is OFF then plug in the usb cable from the computer to the NUVI, after you hear your computer ding from new device connected, and the NUVI displays the computer icon move to step 2

step 2: if you have xp go to START and MY COMPUTER. with vista its START then COMPUTER button on the right side

step 3: with MY COMPUTER window open hold the NUVI power switch to the ON position and RIGHT CLICK the NUVI device logo (blue triangle) and select EJECT .. ( DON;T HIT SAFiLY REMOVE)

step 4: when you see GARMIN display on the screen you can letgo of the power button on the NUVI ****** if you unplugthe usb it will display message stating EXTERNAL POWER LOST SWITCHING TO BATTERY POWER***** while it is plugged to the computer the battery meter will disaper
