Question about Magellan Maestro 4040 GPS Receiver

Maestro 3250 Charging

I received a Magellan Maestro 3250 for Christmas. The power/charger cords plug into the USB port. When I charge the unit, whether in the car or in the house, a screen comes up saying:

"USB Connected
The USB has been connected to the unit. Please follow instructions from PC application for updating maps or software. Please make sure your battery is fully charged or power connected to prevent any power failure during file transfer."

This screen cannot be bypassed and renders the device unusable while plugged in. On long car trips, there is no way to charge while simultaneously using the device. It cannot be plugged in and operate at the same time. How do I get the device to differentiate between power flowing through the USB port and a PC connection in the USB port? Or is this even the problem? Many thanks.

    I HAVGE HOUSE CHARGE CAN I HOOK UP IN HOUSE CURRENT &HOW DO I KNOW IT IS DONE.IS THERE ANY GREEN LIGHT OR RED LIGHT COME ON?

    the usb port may be defect due to multiple plugged in. I also have the same problem and the same screen appears on both wall and car chargers.

    I have the same problem with my Maestro 3250 as rasmith4. I have looked at the Magellan site but can't seem to find the answer. I have also tried to reset the unit but no luck??? Can someone please help me. My email is djoyce21@yahoo.com

The problem is that i was trying to update my Magellan Maestro3250 Navigator to maps and software must of clicked on something now no maps the screen just brings me to system settings it doesn't move from the screen cam somebody please how to solf my problems and to fix my drivers.Thank you!

I accidentally ran into this problem today when I inadvertantly plugged the wrong charger into the unit. I'm guessing that the device isn't getting the precise current it's expecting and thus thinks it's plugged into a computer. I'd suggest getting hold of a different charger and see if the problem goes away.

Installed a new battery in my magellan maestro 4040. battery has been charging for over 12 hours. only 2 bars like original battery.


with the 4040 plugged in to the charger, wiggle the cord to different positions and see if it loses contact (stops charging)

this model has a very common problem with the power port failing..iif it loses contact by testing it in the manner i suggested, it will require either a new one install or at the very least, resoldered,

Will not charge thru the USB or the car charger. Is the battery replaceable?


a magellan 4040 can not charge through the USB port and if it wont charge with a known good car or home charger, then read below.



This is very common problem with this and many model of magellans.

Try the car charger.

Make sure
green light is on the car charger and let it plugged in for awhile, then hold the power button (up to ten seconds) until it starts..if that fails

The following Magellan 2000, 2200t, 2500, 3000, 3100, 3140, 3000, 3050, 4000, 4040, 4050, 5310 and the 6000 are known to have faulty dc connectors...if your Magellan
gps is not charging or will not power up, its most likely the dc power port...

buy the port or get it repaired, HERE

Magellan 4040 won't turn on or charge.

Power cord is not charging unit. There seems to be a loose fit in the socket of the Magellan Maestro 4000. Is the problem with the charger cord or the Maestro 4000 socket?

Unable to charge the 3100. If charged via car


the Magellan Maestro can not be charged using the USB connection.

Magellan Maestro 4250 wont charge


No the device is not defective. magellan has this stupid usb interface problem preventing the unit from being charged and used at the same time, they do that so you have to use there charger. the unit will say usb connected and will not boot up like normal at all. unit will be locked up until the usb is unplugged. most usb devices charge at 5v with 500mA, and the magellan requires 5v 1A. Ipod Charger charges at the 1A with 5v but wont work

Charge Problem


Hello guitarman249,

It sounds like a bad battery. Theoretically, it could be the charger but if the red light on the charger still comes on when the unit is plugged in then the battery is the more likely culprit. The only way to really know for sure is to try charging the unit with a different cable, such as the USB cord used to connect the GPS to a computer. The GPS should charge when connected to USB. If it doesn't, then it's the battery.

Like most GPS receivers, the battery on this one is not replaceable by the user. If you do determine that the battery is causing the problem you will need to contact Magellan tech support to arrange a battery replacement.
