Kenmore Model 20722990 broken coupler

Can you give me information on how to get the back off this washing machine, and how to correctly get to the coupler. I have the machine laid down on it's front side and can tell the coupler is broken.

Stand it back up. Remove the end caps on the front of the control panel, (there is a screw under it). take out the 2 screws. The control panel will come forward then flip up. Next use a screwdriver to pop out the spring clamps that hold the cabinet onto the frame. They are about 3/4 of an inch wide and about 3 inches from each side. Disconnect the lid switch. Now you can tilt the cabinet away from the back of the machine, while tilting the bottom front of the cabinet will slide out and the cabinet can be set aside. now you will have access to the motor etc. Release the clamps holding the pump onto the motor. Now you should see two screws that hold the motor clamps, one above and one below the motor shaft, remove those. Use a flat blade screwdriver to pop off the clamps holding the motor. pull motor out to expose coupling. Make sure to use part # 285753A. repair sould take 10 minutes.

My Kenmore 70 series washer sounds like it has something stuck in it and makes a grinding and buzzing noise the agitator will barely move but the washer will drain but not spin

That could be the motor coupler. It could also be the transmission. It is pretty easy to fix. I recently worked on my brother's washer:

On Monday evening after 10 years of successful washing, the machine did not spin and drain the excess water from the load. What could this be?

depends on the model of your washer. if it is a whirlpool and or kenmore it could be your drive coupler. to check to see if the drive coupler is broken turn off the power, tilt the washer back and lean against the wall. do not tilt all the way on its back could cause futher damage to the washer just enough where you can look underneath of it. what you will see is the pump in line with the pump is your motor. now between the motor and the transmission is your drive coupler. you can take the pump off by removeing the 2 clamps that hold it to the motor leave the hoses attached and just set aside. next remove the clamps that hold on the motor and usually the 2 screws 1/4 inch socket. once the clamps are removed from the motor easyly take off the motor and set on the floor this will make the washer lighter so make sure your washer is not tilted back to far or it may slip and fall on the floor. you might want a helper to hold the washer in place while you do this. Now that you have the motor off check the shaft of the motor this is where the drive coupler sits. one side mounts to the transmission and one to the motor coupled with a rubber grommet. Like i said i am assuming this is a kenmore or whirlpool. if the coupler is not broken it could be the clutch slipping, transmission stuck in neutral and or the timer. let me know if this helps or not. if not please give a model number.

I have a Kenmore top loading large capacity washer model 1028882791. It began washing as usual then began to making a loud humming sound. The agitation stopped. It only makes a loud humming sound. I...

The humming sound is coming from the drive motor running but unable to drive the agitator nor the basket to spin. The drive motor is definitely running as the drain function works because of the fact that drain pump is directly coupled with the rear spline of the motor. The drain pump works in either direction as long as the motor runs. The problem is obviously a broken motor coupler which transfers the mechanical energy of the motor to the transmission. The solution then is to replace the broken coupler. Click on the link below for the detailed step-by-step procedure in replacing the motor coupler.

Replacing Motor Coupler on Kenmore and Whirlpool Top-Load Washing Machines

Belt is loose or needs replaced. on a 70 series kenmore washer machine

Can you provide the exact Make, Model and Kenmore model number? ..........

Kenmore model numbers use the format ###.######## with the first three digits of 110 for Whirlpool manufactured machines.........

The model number on top load washers is usually found by lifting the lid and looking above the tub.

The Fixya numbers are Stock Numbers.

Since basic top load direct drive, top load electronic and front load washers are very different, the actual Model Numbers are necessary to correctly diagnose the problem.

Slipping on direct drive washers is usually caused by a damaged / broken Motor Coupler or clutch.

If yours is a direct drive machine, see the following:

Model 110 20722990 ser. ck 3590340 tp 111 wont agitate spin can hear metallic clicking noise

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?modelNumber=110.20722990

and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive washers use a "Motor Coupler" between the motor and transmission.

Since it will neither agitate nor spin, but you can hear a clicking noise, the Lid Switch is probably all right but the Motor Coupler is likely bad.

It's used as a fail safe device and consists of three parts.

Two of the parts are the same, plastic units with three prongs that fit on one of the motor output shafts and the other on the transmission input shaft. Between them is a rubber piece with six holes.

The power from the motor is transmitted through the rubber piece to the transmission.

The other shaft on the motor directly drives the pump.

If the motor coupler is broken, or worn, the motor may not be able to send full power to the transmission for agitating or spinning.

If the rubber piece is destroyed, you would hear the clicking of the plastic prongs.

See the following for how to remove the cabinet, pump, motor and motor mounting plate to inspect and replace the motor coupler.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=137

If the coupler looks damaged, it's a relatively easy fix.

Pry the plastic pieces from the motor and transmission. Some people use a claw hammer but I've found that using a small (6 inch) pry bar works well.

Carefully fit the plastic pieces over the motor and transmission shafts and press them in place (Use a 1/2" of larger socket to put pressure equally around the pieces.

Put the rubber piece on the transmission plastic piece.

Replace the motor mounting plate.

Carefully line up the plastic prongs on the motor based plastic piece to the three un-used holes in the rubber piece. If they don't line up right, the coupler could be damaged.

Mount the motor, don't forget the two screws, put the pump back on the motor and use its' clips.

Put the cabinet back on, don't forget to plug the lid switch back in and re-mount the console.

When this machine is not spinning, the water should still be able to drain, as the motor drives the pump on the same shaft as the coupler for the tranny. Set to the spin setting and depress the lid switch, if the water still does not drain, you may have something stuck in your pump, which would also lock the motor shaft and not allow it to spin or agitate. If the water does drain, check the motor coupler, which is located between the motor and transmission, if broken, the motor will run but there is no drive to the transmission. Hope this helps...

It sounds more like the timer motor is stopping. There mght be something binding or a dead spot on the motor. The next time it does that, advance the timer slightly a few times and see if it then advances on it's own Check all the wires, too. Take the timer assembly out and flush it several times with alcohol or plastic safe electronics cleaner while operating the timer (engaged) several times.
