Backlight replacement How do I get my backlight replaced on my 2010m Planar monitor? Should I attempt this myself? Where can I just buy the backlight? Any assistance would be appreciated.

Are you sure it's the backlight? Many Planar LCD monitors have issues with the capacitors on their power supply boards. The symptoms include a power light and no picture, or just a flash of a picture when powering up and then nothing.

The fix for some of these problems is about $8 on new capacitors (Plus shipping).

On the PL2010M monitors you need the following parts. I've added digikey part numbers to make life easier:

P10271-ND 220UF 25V Capacitor (3/4 depending on PS)
P10275-ND 470UF 25V Capacitor (1)
P10221-ND 470UF 10V Capacitor (4)

If you're not comfortable with soldering and de-soldering electronics, take it to a local technitian for the work and give them the parts list above. That should work if the failure looks like I described. I've fixed several of these monitors so far. All the problems were related to the power supplies. Same with the Planar PL1700 LCD monitors.

LCD backlights are custom designed for the specific panel. If they make it available at all, you would have to contact Planar, or perhaps the manufacturer of the glass themselves for suggestions. This is not typically something most people can do themselves (it's a kind of "if you have to ask, you're going to have problems" thing), and it's not as if these are typical off-the-shelf items, at least not CCFL lights for large panels.

Are you sure it's not still under warrenty? Most manufacturers rate their backlights at 50,000 hours MTBF... that's decades of normal use. As such, they cover them pretty well. This monitor was released in 2004, and Planar includes a 3-year warrenty with 2-day replacement or some-such... check them out here:

Planar Pe191m goes dark image seen with flashlight

I would suspect either the power suuply or inverter circuits, look for bad caps first which is common problem, see example of failed monitors due to bad caps: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums

Screen goes black after a few seconds

Problems like these happen all the time with LCD monitors. Usually one of two things. Bad Capacitors or a bad backlight. To check this, take a flashlight and point at your monitor (usually at a high angle) and see if you can still see the desktop faintly. If so then its either the back light or capacitor. Backlights shouldnt need replaced too often as they have a extremely long lifespan. Capacitors are relatively cheap and easy to replace, all is required is a soldering iron and an inexpensive trip to a Radio Shack. Though this isnt your monitor, it is a very good tutorial on how to go about replacing the capacitors.http://www.wizardanswers.com/liquidvideorepair.html If it is the backlight, here is another tutorial for that :D http://www.inventgeek.com/Projects/shorts/lcdfix.aspx

Label over the functions needs to be replaced

theresa_bugb, If your monitor is not in current production by the manufacturer your chances are slim to none of obtaining a replacement. Have you searched out the manufacturer over the web? Try going to a local electronics retailer and check with their service department and find out if they even service this PLANAR monitor or can even order replacement parts. Planar 2010M auto adjust

This may be related to a power supply problem that these monitor have. I think you need to fix the power supply board inside the display itself. It's giving the logic board and backlights fluctuating power and they have weird / intermittant problems.
There is a supplier of power boards online, you can google them with numbers from the board but I don't suggest using them. Look for information on the company before you buy from them. I've seen a lot of complaints for this "international" company.

First check that you are getting a strong 12V from the external power adapter. If so, the problems may be as simple as changing out a few capacitors. (about $8 in new capacitors, plus shipping)

On the PL2010M monitors you need the following parts. I've added digikey part numbers to make life easier:

P10271-ND 220UF 25V Capacitor (3 or 4 depending on PS)
P10275-ND 470UF 25V Capacitor (1)
P10221-ND 470UF 10V Capacitor (4)

If you're not comfortable with soldering and de-soldering electronics, take it to a local technician for the work and give them the parts list above. That should work to fix your issues. I've fixed several of these monitors so far. All the problems were related to the power supplies having bad capacitors. Same with the Planar PL1700 LCD monitors.
There is also a single capacitor on the display logic board, but I haven't seen this one go bad yet.
Good luck!

Sceptre X9G-Komodo IV

I recently came accross one of these monitors (Planar PE191M) with the identical issue. The resolution was to replace the two 470ufd 25V capacitors that are located on the main power board. The main power board also contains the audio circuit and more importantly the inverter circuit that drives the CCFL backlighting. The suspect caps were identified using an ESR meter; if you happen to have one of these meters you can confirm this is the issue with your unit(s), alternatively you can just replace the two capacitors and see if it resolves your issue. Hope this info helps someone out there.

It could likely be the flyback transformer, usually found in the right or left rear corner of the monitor. Be careful though, it packs enough stored power to kill ya. ZT3000 "Beta tester of "0"s and "1's"
