Hi,
Keep the red and black wires were they are. They are the hot wires.
The green and the white wires can be connected together as the "neutral" or white wire and the "ground" or green wires are esstenially a redundant connection for safety.
Sometimes you will need to wire nut the green and white to a separate wire so that you have only one wire to get into the outlet.

I hope that this will help you to solve your problem!

Thanks for using Fixya!!

This sounds like you should call an electrician, or someone that knows wiring. Red and Black are both hot, White is neutral, and Green is ground. Remove the ground strap from the center of the terminal block to the case. Put green wire to the case, white in the middle, and red or black to either side. Your last question I do not understand. But it sounds like you need an electrician to connect a 4 prong receptacle, with the proper 4 conductor wire to your breaker box.

I need to change a 3 prong to 4 prong on a Kenmore 800 series dryer. I know where the green ground wire grounds, but not the other 3. :)

Either way, plug or dryer cord the white wire goes with the green wire, they are pretty much the same. On the dryer at the block where you are connecting the cord, look just above it and you'll see wires coming into it, the red and black are on the outside, I'm not sure which color on which side but the white and green go in the middle on top one another and the red and black match respectively.

I have a four prong clothes dryer plug that needs to go in a three prong outlet - 220v. Any ideas?

It's either you convert the 3-prong outlet to 4-prong or the 4-prong cord to 3-prong. But the latter is easier and more feasible. Unplug the dryer then disconnect the 4-prong cord from the dryer. Note that it has red, black, white, and green/yellow wires but sometimes the red and black wires are both replaced by same color wire, usually gray. The red and black wires are lines L1 and L2 reversibly, meaning they can switch places, while the white and green/yellow wires are the neutral line and ground, respectively.

Get yourself a 3-prong cord and note that it has red , black, and white wires but sometimes, like the 4-pronged one, the red and black wires are both replaced by same color wire, usually gray and can also switch places. All you have to do now is connect these 3 wires in the same manner they are connected as 4-prong cord to the terminal block. The wire strapped to the dryer cabinet and connected to the green/yellow wire of the 4-prong cord wire is now left hanging. The last step is to connect this hanging strap wire to the same terminal on the terminal block (center) where the white wire (neutral) is connected and it's done.

It can be observed that converting a 4-prong cord to 3-prong cord is merely joining the neutral line (white) and the ground (green/yellow) thereby reducing the number of prongs from 4 to 3. On the other hand, converting a 3-prong cord to 4-prong cord is merely splitting the neutral line and the ground thereby increasing the number of prongs from 3 to 4. I HAVE AN OLDER MODEL KENMORE DRYER MODEL NUMBER 86872800 AND A NEWER HOME HOME WITH 4 CONNECTORS DRYER HAS ROOM FOR THREE HOW DO I CONNECT NEW CORD

You have to replace the dryer's 3-prong cord to 4-prong. Get yourself a 4-prong cord then on the terminal block at the rear of the dryer, connect the wires of the 4-prong cord to where the same wire colors (red, black, and white) of the 3-prong cord connects to. The only modification needs to be done is on the green/yellow stripe wire that connects from the white wire terminal to the dryer's cabinet. Remove this wire (green/yellow stripe) from the white wire terminal then connect it to the same wire color (green/yellow stripe) of the 4-prong cord and you are done. The new wire configuration would then be red, black, and white on the terminal block and green/yellow stripe wire on the cabinet.

I have a FEQ1442es dryer. I need to change it from a 4 pronged plug to a three prong, as that is what outlet my condo has... Is there any special order etc. in which to attatch the connections on the...

The 4-prong plug has red, black, white, and green/yellow wires while the 3-prong plug has red, black, and white wires. The only difference is the green/yellow (ground) wire of the 4-prong plug which is attached to the dryer cabinet. All you have to do is connect the wires of the 3-prong plug in the same way the same wire colors are connected with the 4-prong plug then connect the terminal on the cabinet, where the green/yellow (ground) wire of the 4-prong plug is formerly connected, to the white wire of the 3-prong plug.

I have a 3 wire dryer and need to convertto a 4

The following link explains how to correctly install a 220VAC appliance cord:

Match the corresponding colors at the terminal block, making sure the Neutral (White) and Ground (Green or Bare Copper) wires are NOT terminated together.

If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

Two options,

1) get a three wire outlet ("plug in")
2) get a 4 conductor cable.

The 4th wire is green or bare - ground the wire to the cabinet.

You are 'safer' with the 4 conductor wire. (In the past, White served as the neutral conductor and the case may have been 'bonded' to the white, providing a "ground". Today, I believe the code requires a separate ground. Even though the white and green join in the service panel and go both to ground and "back" to the utility, there is the possibility some installations are wired through a sub panel. Common use of white as neutral and ground is not allowed in a sub-panel in most jurisdictions). Black to black, Red to red, White to white and Green (or bare) to the frame. You can make a hole and connect it or use an existing screw that is nearby to make the connection.

If you have a volt meter, you can check your existing outlet. You should get 220 V between the two legs, 110 V between "red" and "white", 110 V between "black" and "white", 110 V between "red" and "ground", 110 V between "black" and "ground", and no reading between "white" and "ground".

The terminals on your existing outlet should be clearly marked and the color code of the wire should be clear although it is POSSIBLE the color of the conductors is all black. The above series of tests will help you determine what is what if necessary.

If you are still unsure, you should get the advice of a licensed electrician in your area (which I am neither)

I hope this helps you

Need to change the cord on my Maytag MDE6000AYW from 3 prong to 4 prong. The (4) prong cable has black, white, green, red cables. Which colored cable connects to which terminal inside the dryer?

BLACK and RED are 110-120VAC each. WHITE is NEUTRAL - does not carry power. GREEN is GROUND. The Black, Red, and White Wires should connect to the terminal block & should correspond the colored wires already connected to the block from the machine. The Green wire should be grounded to the equipment chassis. I hope this answers your question.

Kenmore ele dryer

Remove the ground strap from the middle terminal block in the dryer. Attach the white wire to this terminal. Take the green wire and attach it to the frame of the dryer. Attach the red wire to the right hand terminal, and the black wire to the left side terminal.
