When using any program that is graphical, my dell inspiron 6400 has vertical lines flash in the center or right half of the screen, then slows down and seems as if it crashes. After about two to four minutes it picks back up and slowly starts to work at full speed.

Go to http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?&l=en&s=gen&os=WW1&osl=en&SystemID=INSPIRONI6400/E1505 and download/install the graphics driver again. If this doesn't correct the issue then the graphics card is failing and will need to be replaced not too long from now.

One narrow vertical red line constantly on screen of Inspiron 6400 running Windows 7.

Check on another external monitor, if the picture is ok there, eliminate a faulty graphics chip
If picture is still poor, Graphics chip is faulty

You are now left with the issue of it being the VGA cable from the mobo to the screen, or a faulty screen. It may be that you just need to have the connections checked, but also may point to a replacement screen or Cable being needed

Vertical lines in my laptop screen

Try connecting an external monitor to the Dell Inspiron 9300 and see if the vertical line is also present on the monitor. If the monitor display is fine, then your laptop’s LCD display panel is defective. If the monitor also displays the vertical line, then your problem is with either the video card or motherboard located inside your laptop.
Not sure if the Compaq Presario has an external monitor plug, but if it does the above procedure can be applied to that one as well.
