Why wouldn't my em5000sx honda generator not run my rheem gas heater.

  • The Auto Throttle System switch needs to be in the off position.
  • If the generator has not been used for awhile than the fuel is stale and the generator may be slow in responding to the load change. Replace fuel with fresh fuel.
  • Attach a second load such as a 100 watt light bulb standard bulb with a tungsten filament. Observe the light as the heater cycles. If the light goes very dim than the generator is slow responding to a load change. Generator carburetor needs to be cleaned, tune-up. Run fresh fuel under load to see if carburetor will clean itself.
  • Try adding choke to see if richer mixture reduces voltage dip. Check manual for mixture adjustments.

Have a space heater in the living room and one in the kitchen. Seem to work fine during the day but go out at night. What could be causing that?

These unit have a Pilot/ODS system built into them.
The ODS (Oxygen Depletion System) will shut these units of if the oxygen get to low.
This will sometimes happen more at night that during the day...people moving around more during the day, opening a door let more oxygen in.

Try cracking a window and see if the units stay on all night as a test to see if this could be the problem.

When new microwave is turned on, the lights in the kitchen dim.

Sounds like your microwave's outlet is on the same circuit with the lights.

High-current devices like microwave ovens should be on their own breaker if possible.

If the dimming is very slight, it may be okay.

If it's considerable, it may be a good idea to run a separate line to the microwave's outlet - especially if it starts blowing your breaker!
