My seagate 500 gig free agent desk external drive has suddenly stopped working. It was working fine 2 days ago and then yesterday it apparently wasn't connected so I reconnected it and then it seemed to be ok ..until I tried sharing the drive with the laptop..when it was almost done - it came up with an error - delayed write failed...and then windows xp wouldn't recognize the drive anymore..the lights were on...but nothing would see it. Well I unplugged it overnight figuring it might be overheating and now it won't power on at all..can someone help me? I don't know why it won't turn back on... If I unplug the power supply and plug it back in it sounds like its starting up..but then stops... ?

Do a FULL POWER DOWN Reboot. and try a different USB outlet in the PC... same Laptop to see if it is in your PC that is causing the problem.
Note: Most of those Drives do stop unless they are connected to the PC... energy savings.
If that didnt work... you could have a failed drive. Seagate should help you do some diag if it is in warranty... typically 3 years.

Try to remove internal drive from enclosure and connect directly to a computer. If it still makes any of these sounds then most likely it's too late and heads are bad now. If you need to recover files you will need to send the drive into data recovery lab. There's no way you can do it at home I'm afraid.

Seagate FreeAgent, 500 GB p/n 9nk2al-510 stopped working

There's not much troubelshooting you can do with a failed external disk. power off PC and hd and then disconnect all cables, wait 30 secs, power the PC on, let it boot to the OS, power the hard drive on and then connect. If the drive shows up but you still cannot access it or get weird property readings, it generally means the hd controller has failed. If the data's worth more than $1000, you can take it to a data recovery group like Ontrak or Cherry Systems, but otherwise, just get a new hd and restore whatever backups you have.

Seagate free agent pro 500 gig external hard drive NOT RECOGNIZED

You better check with the Seagate people. This seems to be a problem with the casing. And since you're under warranty, you can get a replacement.

My Seagate Free Agent Classic external hard drive won't work

Have you tried a different USB port? Some USB chipsets are prone to frying if you use the front accessible ports. Also, try the drive on another computer.
