Re: No Dial Tone on phones or modem
If you have a dial tone when your computer is not plugged in, then the problem ls with your computer[ a possible short in the computer] the phone cord to the jack, or anything in between such as a dsl modem.if you have dsl, be sure your ethernet cord [ that's the wider plug cord] is in the wider jack in back of the computer. it wont fit in the regular phone jack.if you have dial up, be sure the phone cord is in the regular jack not the ethernet port.[if you have one]

First, try to check every telephone line is properly plugged into its phone jack. If you have a problem with just one phone, plug a different phone into that jack. If the second phone works, the problem lies in the first phone.
Then unplug each phone and answering machine in your house, one at a time. Wait 30 seconds after unplugging the first device. Pick up another phone to see if there's a dial tone -- if there is, then the first phone may be faulty. If not, continue unplugging phones in the same way and check for dial tone. If you find a phone that doesn't work, plug all your other phones back in and see if they work properly. The faulty phone should be replaced.
or disconnect the plug from the test jack inside the exterior box. This disconnects your inside wiring from phone company's line. If you have more than one line, select the test jack for the line that is causing the problem. Plug your phone into the jack; this plugs you directly into the phone company's line. If you have a cable modem, plug the phone directly into the jack on the modem.
Then pick up the phone receiver to see if there's a dial tone. If there's no dial tone, the problem is with your outside wiring. If there is a dial tone, the trouble is caused by your inside wiring, equipment or jacks.
Problem:- User's modem does not dial or does not connect. Tip:- Prove that computer is connected with phone line and check that phone line contains dial tone.Therefor check that connection is connect or not.
Connection may not be less than six feet (1.8 meter).
Check dial tone by plug in the phone in phone jack.
If user has many more services (such as call waiting, call messaging OR voice mail) then check that these all are cleared or not and check call waiting is disabled while using modem.
Disconnect any answering machine, fax machine or printer which are on line with modem.
Check that are you not using digital, rollover or PBX line? These type of lines not works with modem.
Try with another phone line. (For this, you have another phone number or another phone line). If user connected with another line then you need to complain in phone company.
Check the physical connection of the phone line to the computer make sure that it is connected to phone line symbol of the Ethernet adapter. Then make sure that the driver of the adapter is installed properly on the computer or you can try to scan the hardware first before the re-installation of the driver using the adapter.
Typically, a fax machine is connected directly to a telephone wall jack with a known working connection. Try plugging the fax machine directly into a wall jack first and pick up the handset on the fax machine if it has one. You should get a dial tone. Then try to fax something to someone you know.
The machine can also usually be routed through the modem in a computer by connecting the "line" cord on the modem to the wall jack and plugging the fax machine into the the "phone" jack on the modem. You may need to install the software that came with the fax machine to get this to work.
If you have no dial tone, check the wall jack with a known to be working single line phone. If there is a dial tone, it's something to do with fax machine, the computer modem or the connections.
Some fax machines can take advantage of internet faxing through a cable modem or DSL connection. Check your manual for the options available.
is your computer hooked up dsl or dial up? unplug all the phones and computer from the phone jacks.plug a corded phone into the jack and check for dial. if you don't have dial tone, call your phone company. if you do have dial tone, plug everything in one at a time and see if the phone line goes dead.if it does, the last thing you plugged in is the problem.
