Maytag MDE4806AYW Electric Dryer won't stay running

The dryer was running last night when we had a power outage. I went to turn the dryer on this morning and it will start with no problem. After about 15-20 seconds all of the lights around the start dial turn on and then off and the dryer shuts off. I notice that the lights continue to do that even if the dryer is not on. What could be the problem?

We have the exact same problem with our Maytag dryer. Also had some power outages but not sure if the dryer was running during the outages. Any help with this problem will be appreciated.

I have the same dryer and the same problem. We also experience a power outage a couple days ago. Now my dryer runs for 10 seconds then stops. Flashing lights too. What do you do to fix this! I have two children and my laundry MUST GO ON!

I'm having the same problem also after a power outage. Has anyone found the cure?

  • raiden56 May 11, 2008

This sounds exactly like my problem except mine doesn't have the flashing lights. The other night there was a close (mile or two) lightning strike and the power went off immediately. It then came on and went out quickly repeatedly 5 or 6 times. I have allot of computers and electronics so I switched off my main breaker till power was restored. I realized I had problems with my dryer that evening. Same exact dryer. Does anyone know if this particular problem with the control board and or power fluctuations.

HELP! I have the same problem, but it's at a vacation home so I don't know if there was a power outage. But we already replaced the computer board and the problem still exists. Any ideas?

I am having the same problem. It worked fine in the morning and in the afternoon we had some bad storms with flickering power outages, and a few fairly close lightning strikes. Sure enough, when you go to start it, it works fine, but then after about 10 seconds or so, the LED lights go out on the panel and the dryer shuts off. Going to get a new control board and hope it works. From reading some of these, it sounds like it should.

I had a similar scenario: after power outage last night, dryer will start but won't stay on. Typical timing is 10-25 seconds. After researching this issue online, typical issue seems to be with the control board. Found the cheapest one at searsdirectparts.com for $119. Should arrive via UPS in 3 days and hopefully this will solve the problem!

We had this problem after a power outage and we ordered from PartsSelect.com Web sight. They have free shipping and an upgrade in the shipping to next business day. I chose the upgrade. Before doing so I checked the business hours of the firm. They are Monday thru Saturday. I thought that I would have my part by Saturday. I order it on Thursday night and it was not delivered until Monday Morning at 9:00 am. I went the weekend with clothes in my washing machine mildewing. I would have used the 24.95 charged for the upgrade in shipping to take my clothes to the laundry mat and dry them. I fell that the 24.95 I was charged for shipping should have gotten me Saturday delivery. My package only weighed 8 Oz and it was double boxed. Lesson is do not order items after 12:00 noon and expect delivery until Monday even if you upgrade to expedited shipping. This solution solved the problem.

I had this problem and after diagnosing that it wasn't mechanical because the dryer would run for roughly 30 sec and turn off, I replaced the control board. Now it works like it is brand new. Was very easy to replace and cost about $80 which is much cheaper than calling a repair man, considering it would have cost $50 to have someone come out plus parts and labor after the problem was found.

My Maytag dryer (model # MDE4806AYW) makes a grinding sound all of the sudden. Sounds like the cylinder drum is scraping on something. The dryer is only a couple of years old. What do you think needs to be...

Could be your front glides on your drum housing. They are just Teflon pads that the front of the drum rides on. If they wear down you will get a metal on metal rubbing. The part number is 40116501. The other possibility could be your rear rollers going bad but they usually will make almost a squeak usually. They are what support the rear end of the drum.
Hope this helps _MJ_
