    I hope this is not a dumb question, but How do I take a resistance reading?

    My oven will not bake or broil. The controls are working. It will run through all self-clean cycles. We have unplugged/plugged the range, ran the self-clean and checked the circuit breaker.

I am assuming the BROILER works fine in the oven, right? If so, you may have a bad igniter for the BAKE manifold. It is common for them to wear out or become weak. Since the BROILER is not commonly used as much as the BAKE function, the BAKE igniter tends to wear out faster. You can check the igniter by removing the bottom plate of the oven, exposing the BAKE manifold. There will be a glow bar type igniter that begins to glow when the turn the oven on to preheat. If the igniter does not glow...a resistance reading will determine if it still good or not. It should read a low resistance if good. If the igniter glows, but still does not ignite, take a current reading. The igniter will have a current reading of 3.2 to 3.7 amps if good. In either case, if you do not get the desired readings, simply replace the igniter. There are two types of igniters listed under your model number:

Horizontal Mount - Part: #1034629 Price: $44.50
Vertical Mount - Part: #949510 Price: $41.70

This depends on how yours is mounted. Refer to your owners manual to see if there is a parts index listing. I hope this helps you. Post back with comments if I can assist any further.

CAUTION: Make sure you disconnect power from the range BEFORE connecting meter leads to the igniter leads. The igniter connector is usually found under the oven behind the lower drawer. In addition: if you DO purchase a new igniter, use care in handling it. The oil from your hands can potentially damage the igniter coil if you are not careful. This will result in a shorter life expectancy.

    Not a dumb question at all. The only dumb question is the one you don't ask. Unplug the range so there is no electrical power applied. Remove the lower panel of the oven to access the igniter. Remove the lower drawer assembly and locate the two white wires running from the igniter. Unplug the igniter or remove the wire lugs. If you know how to use a multimeter, set the meter to the lowest resistance scale and connect the meter leads across the wires. You should get a resistance reading close to 0 ohms. I hope this helps...if I were a betting man, I would guess that the igniter is bad, though.

I wish I had seen this page before the repairman was here today. For a $70 service fee, he told me the igniter needed to be replaced, showed me how to do it, and then gave me a couple of local places to get the parts which would be much cheaper than what he would have to charge. I got the part at a third of his price, installed it in about 5 minutes and it is now working fine.

No Bake; everything else works

Hi, When you put the oven on bake, can you see the ignitor glowing but get no flame?
Sound like the ignitor might be getting weak and not opening the gas valve. Please let me know if this sounds like the problem.
It is common for the ignitor to go bad. Even if it glows, it can be bad.

Maytag MGR5775QDW won't bake

Find the bake ignitor (you may need to remove bottom drawer or oven cavity floor to get to the ignitor). Turn on the bake. If the bake ignitor comes on (starts glowing after a few seconds) - check the amperage on the bake ignitor wires when it's on. If the ignitor is a round style - amperage should be 2.5-3A, if the ignitor is rectangular - 3 - 3.6A. If less than 2.5A or 3A respectively - replace ignitor. If the ignitor does not come on - check the voltage on the ignitor, should be the line voltage 110-120v AC. If there is a line voltage on the ignitor and it's not coming on - replace.
Ignitor part numbers for round style ones: 4342528, WB2X9154, SGR403, 5304401265;
rectangular styles: 12400035, WB13K21, WB2X9998, SGR412, NR020, 5303935066, 814269, 9753108.
Ignitors of the same shape (i.e. rectangular) are interchangeable, if you can splice the wires.

Good luck!
