Question about HP Jornada 680e Pocket PC

Blank Screen on Jornada 680e

My Jornada is my very best side-kick and it has developed a real problem. It's still synching with my computer and reminding me of meetings and appointments but I can't see anything. The screen was getting darker and I searched for suggestions which included replacing the stand-by battery and letting the unit run out then recharging it. I did both. The new stand-by battery helped for a day. Recharging the unit did nothing. And now the screen is completely black. Jornada is still beeping and flashing its little green light but I can't see what it's telling me to do. Please help 'cause they don't make anything like this anymore and I just love it!

Well, I'm not geeky enough to disassemble and, as I indicated in my original posts, I've tried all the other stuff. Please DO NOT use the "boat anchor" comment; I have WAAYYY too much "unsynched" stuff on it.

  • Johnsonius Jan 30, 2008

I found the two screws and see how to put it back together should I decide to take it apart. The catch will be finding the screen. I checked eBay and didn't find one. Any other suggestions 'cause HP doesn't give me any help at all? They don't have the parts or they don't want to talk about it one. They sure oughta take care of 'em 'cause they sure don't make a replacement for 'em!

Dude! Your hands are bigger than mine! But thanks for the suggestion about the 720. Does HP still support that!?!

Hi,

the screen cable might have some problem - or might just need adjusting it. (disassembly required).
The Jornada's screen cable eventually develops a break in one of the wires. You can't really fix that type of ribbon cable, and HP doesn't sell replacements. You can try to wiggle the cable until it starts working again, but it'll only work intermittently and for so long before it's completly dead again. About all you can do is find another Jornada that hasn't seem so much use.

Goodluck,
Dont forget to rate me as fixya..

  • Priya darshan Jan 30, 2008

    try this trick out once:

grab the case of the screen near the bottom where says jornada,
give it a firm squeeze while at the same time lifting "up" then pull
it "towards" me and push it back "down" to reset the screen. It
usually doesn't work the first time, but you should be able to see the
screen flicker if you are making progress.

    OR
you can use the screen, cable, etc out of a Jornada 720 in place of your 680's

  • Priya darshan Jan 31, 2008

Yes the Hp does support and that trick will just work fine..

I have a Jornada 680. My screen is blank even after changing the back up battery and performing both a soft reboot and a hard reboot.

It could possbily be a loose connector or more likely its a broken flexi PCA. You could try swapping the screens with another Jornada, by buying a faulty one off of ebay that doesn't have a faulty screen.

Dust under Jornada screen

Well, you should not even try to clean it. Contact your local Jornada support and they will get the unit to repair, This is a in warranty thing, so you don??t have to pay anything.

How to activate daylight saving mode on Jornada 568?

The PDA toy, 17 years old now, who uses something this old?

in what country, DLS varies by country and state
and the rules changed here, in 2005. (wiki it)
it's winter here, in USA< so.. you are on other half of earth. (lower)
most computers made for 42 years, , ALL use a RTC chip
same chip as in a wrist watch( close to same, very close)

this chip does all that magic even to the level of a
perpetual calendar ! wiki that.?
so the BIOS can set (all real PCs) all that and the OS too.
when you change the OS time and date it then goes to the
BIOS RTC page and changes it there so they are in sync.
they Sync, up,

I do not know where Any OS stores time, after all it be different in all 100's of OS made, and your old relic PDA , gawd knows.
your manual for Jornada
tells you on PAGE 13, when you reset the Jornada, or or run it the first time, it asks for time city and time zone.
what makes you think this toy device even does daylight saving time, (it have to do every city on earth to do that , no easy thing)
on a real computer here, we can set our clock to WWV time.
via the WWV or WWVH, radio site, here, "atomic time"
then it sets you per the daylight savings (bit set selection)
That is how it works best on a real PC. or notebook.
maybe your Toy PDA is set this way (page 101)
Using ActiveSync, you can synchronize information in Microsoft Outlook
or Microsoft Exchange on your desktop PC with information in Pocket
Outlook on your hp Jornada."
but wait MS shut all that down long ago......

I googled for you and found very little on the RTC functions of you PDA. (but it is too old now, really)
the manual only has very little on topic, (so is limited in features)
http://www.hp.com/ctg/Manual/bpia2371.pdf

my guess is you are looking for something that DOES NOT EXIST.
seem so, no? not in the official book
HP forum zero hits.
google zero hits.
last Jornada sold on ebay for $5 ,gets you 7 of them,
71cents (USD) each, less than 1 PEACH, here
they are not considered here, just trash.

Can't synch, only connects as guest

I have had this happen to me at work. You need to backup your Jornada on the computer that works to sync (VERY IMPORTANT) and then hard reset the Jornada (which wipes it clean). Make sure that you put the name back into the Jornada identification (it will be wiped out by the hard reset). Then try to synch on the computer that can't synch except as Guest now. It should sync fine. Then you will need to sync on the computer that works to sync to restore the backup file. Then you will be back to normal. It is a pain. I don't know why it happens but I know this solution worked for me. Let us know if it works for you.

Jornada 565 no longer being seen by ActiveSync?

Occasionally under XP Pro, my 564 won't be recognized when I put it on the cradle to sync. I just take it off the cradle and try again. My understanding is the XP loads an HP driver when the Jornada is detected as connected by USB, if that driver doesn't load succesfully, then XP won't recognize the Jornada.
