Wouldn't like to try but the cables are the same and using the connectors in the correct formation you should be able to but risky.

Thanks J

You have to "short" two of the sockets.
Get the CORRECT two, or else you could kill yourself, or "fry" the power-supply.
Details: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/insidethepc/a/atx-pinout-24-pin-12v-psu.htm about the "pin-out" arrangement.

It would be easier/safer to connect the sockets to a motherboard, and connect a power-switch to the ON/OFF pins on the motherboard, and then use that power-switch.

NO NO NO... PC power supplies are switching supply's. The transformers use high voltage to drive other components. Increasing the power out of the supply will require you to upgrade the power supply to a higher wattage output.

My power went out and when it came back on the computer would not come on

eMachines uses low quality hardware components inside their computers. This is the way they can sell them at budget prices.

One main hardware component is the low quality power supply they use.
A generic power supply made by Bestec. (A generic power supply manufacturer)

(PSU. Power Supply Unit. The type of PSU used is a SMPS.
Switched-Mode Power Supply,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switched-mode_power_supply )

Low quality;
A) Electrolytic Capacitors (Radial Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor)
B) Rectifier Bridge
C) MOSFET/s
D) Wiring is too small in gauge
to name a few of the components.

However IMHO it is also best to check out the Power On switch.
There is a simple test to see whether the problem is a faulty Power On switch, or a faulty Power Supply.

The test involves bypassing the Power On switch. The Power On switch is not involved in this test.
A jumper wire is used on the Soft Power On wire, [ PS-ON ], and a Ground wire in the ATX main power cable connector.

If you bypass, and the Power Supply comes on you have a bad Power On switch.
If the Power Supply does Not come on you have a bad Power Supply.
If you would like to know more in detail on how to perform this simple test, simply post so in a Comment.

The Power Supply used is just a common ATX version.
ATX refers to the Form Factor of the power supply.
Regular size ATX form factor is approximately 6 inches Wide, 5-1/2 inches Long, and 3-1/2 inches Tall. (Height)

There are also differences in the pinout of the ATX main power cable.
Yours may have 20-pins, or 24-pins.
Power Supply's sold now take this into consideration.
Their ATX main power cable can be used as a 20-pin, or a 24-pin version.

[ General example of a 20-pin ATX main power cable, and it's connector,

Example of a 24-pin ATX main power cable, and it's connector,

http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#atxmain24

Your motherboard may also require an additional power cable, commonly referred to as a P4 power cable, or P4 ATX 12V power cable, or just ATX 12V.
The actual name is 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable,

http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#atx12v4

If you would like help in finding an inexpensive reliable Power Supply, please post in a Comment.
I will need to know what Model Number of eMachine you have. It's on the back next to the Windows product key, or up on the side of the computer tower.

If you need anything explained that I have stated here, please let me know in a Comment.

I bought a HP 6710f Pavillion desktop, running windows 7, and found out it only has a 250 watt power supply. I turned around and bought an Antec Greenwatts 500 watt ATX 12v v2.3 psu to install for future...

Presuming you mean the Earthwatts 500:
Should work, though the Earthwatts has the 24 pin ATX instead of the 20-pin.
http://www.atxpowersupplies.com/manuals/Antec-Earthwatts-EA-500D-user-manual.pdf
You just need to snap the 24-pin connector apart to make it work as a 20-pin. It can be snapped back together for future motherboards.
The Bestec is just a standard ATX power supply

Hi lantzgema,
I looked up the specs of your d530 and all I could find out is that you have a 150 power supply, calling HP technical support was no help at all.
I did find some pinouts you can look at and determine which one exactly you have. Hope this help out.

Dell ATX(12v) power supply

The fact that it is made by Dell is irrelivent.

ATX is a standard and so are 20 and 24 pin motheroboard connectors.

You should find what you need by searching for: power supply unit on Wikipedia and Google.

Good luck!

Power supply not working?

To see if power supply works
unplug the psu from the motherboard and drives
then plug the power cord into psu and wall
the fan should come on letting you know that it works.

you can also get a multimeter and check each individual connector on the 20/24 pin connector to motherboard.
check the psu docs for the correct voltages to each pin

If you smelled smoke then chances are that something may have gotten toasted.
remove all expansion cards and try to turn on computer if nothing happens then the motherboard may have gotten toasted.
Check the motherboard and expansion cards along with memory for shorts and burn spots.
