Laptop wIll not boot, Beeps 8 Times

My laptop worked fine but then yesterday I shut it down and it would not boot up again. Instead the system beeps eight times and the blue sustem light stays on. I noticed that it does not try and read the hard drive and I tried using an emergency boot up CD but that did not work as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Lemmor:

Thank you for your help. I too thought it was the power source so I tried this last night. Unfortunately, this did not work. What puzzles me is the sequence of the beeps,. First I get one beep followed by three beeps then another three beeps and then one beep. I have a hard drive software installed that notifies me if the hard drive is bad but the last time I checked it, it said the hard drive was good, no errors.

Check the memory chips, they might not be seated properly. tips..try one stick in the slot, then try the same in the other slot if it doesn't work. then the same with the other memory stick

Thank You La_z_boy !!! I owe you so much in the karmic worlds of worlds. For almost 3 years I banged and tilted wondering why the laptop would beep 8 times and not start like this sometimes and once in a blue moon it would miraculously rev up and I would leave it running for months. Others suggested video card issue such as a loose video card or a bad one etc. etc. Of course in my case it did not help at all because I also have two stripped screws on my computer bottom thus making me unable to take off the bottom to take a look!! So I had to keep whacking and bopping and tilting my laptop... but today it all came to a head and hours of such behavior did nothing. Of course as we know on the Toshiba Satellite M35X-S114 the Memory Chip has its on compartment at the bottom with only one screw on it. Lo and Behold, Today I came across this article opened the compartment, took out the memory chip and thrust it back in.... et voila, the computer started up right away!! THANK YOU SO MUCH! Lets pray this was it and this awesomeness continues!

The battery might be drained... Connect it to a power source via its power adopter to your laptop, don't turn it on at once, leave it for 15 minutes then try turning it on...

Hoping this would help.....

Try link: http://blog.parts-people.com/2014/06/27/dell-inspiron-m501r-m5010-beep-codes-diagnostic-indicators-2/ How to identify beep codes: When a laptop or computer first powers on, it goes through an initial set of diagnostic tests to make sure vital components are preforming correctly. These tests are called POST or Power On Self Test. When a test fails, the user is notified via POST codes, Light codes, or Beep codes. For diagnosing Beep codes you need to:
  • Power on the laptop or restart it if it is already on.
  • Listen to the number of consecutive beeps when the computer begins to boot. Restarting the laptop may be necessary and should not harm the laptop at this time.

My DELL D630 beeps 6 times at startup and proceeds to boot up successfully. After bootup the keyboard does not work at all. However the touchpad and works fine and I am able to perform all those actions...

Grab a USB keyboard and plug it up to the laptop to see if it works. If it does type in windows then its hardware problem if not its a software problem.
How I check to see if this is hardware problem:
Those Beeps are a series or sequence of beep codes called Bios beep codes they usually point to Memory sticks or Keyboard. Here is a website that I use to help determine what the beeps mean.
http://www.bioscentral.com/postcodes/dellbios.htm
Remove battery and unplug power adaptor!
Try this! Page 22 is the first memory stick ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_latitude_laptop/latitude-d630_service%20manual_en-us.pdf
easy to get to. Take the memory out . power up the laptop listen for beeps. It should say the system memory has been changed f1 to continue. Let it load up and test your if keyboard has issue. power down the laptop and power it back up listen for beep again. If the same thing power laptop down. Place back the memory that you took out and go to page 19 to remove keyboard. The Second piece of memory is underneath the keyboard. Remove that then power down the laptop and restart it again. Listen to beep again for change for it will get the same message that the system memory has been change let it load up and power it down and restart it again. If the keyboard doesnt work then you know its the keyboard now.

I have removed the lcd display of my dell inspiron n4010 since it was damaged n connected a led tv to the laptop using hdmi cable. I hear 8 beeps wen the system starts once n again wen windows is about to...

BIOS beeps like that are an indicator of a hardware fault. In this case, it's telling you there is no monitor connected. You shouldn't have any problems using your laptop this way (I had a similar setup with a Toshiba for about a year). Note that if you reinstall Windows or your video driver, the HDMI output may not function right away which could leave you stuck in the dark, literally. Otherwise, you should be fine.

When powering up I get 2 short beeps and one long one.

The beep code is signifying either improperly seated/ bad ram or improperly seated/ bad video card. Since you replaced the RAM I would say it would be a bad video card. Replace & reboot. Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer. Thanks.

Boot problem

You would need to note whether the 8 blinks are in a specific order; this is probably equivalent to beep codes and the spacing (grouping) of the beeps/blinks may tell you what problem you are having (other than having clumsy buddies).
Check to see if they are grouped in some recognizable manner such as 3-3-2 and then you would have to check with Acer to decode the sequence. Depending on whose BIOS is installed in your model, the 8 blinks equally spaced may be valid too and tell you the nature of the problem..
An example of the 'beep' codes can be seen here, midway down the page:

HP 1 long and 2 short beeps

I had the same problem. Turn on your laptop (dv2000) and let it do its thing with the black screen and One long and Two short beeps. Keep the laptop plugged in...Now here is where the "are you kidding me" part kicks in.

Wrap your laptop (while it's on) in a blanket and put it on a bed or a couch (where the laptop won't have room to circulate air beneath it). You must leave it wrapped in the blanket for about 30 minutes minimum, or wait an hour if possible.

Chances are, your laptop will get ver hot and shut itself down at some point before you come back in an hour. When the hour is up, try turning on your laptop again. Ideally, it should work and you now have a working laptop again.

I realize this sounds crazy, but I am typing this quick fix from my dv2000 after doing exactly what i just subscribed. I read it on some other forum when i was on my wife's pc. If this doesn't work the first time, try it one or two more times. This trick has something to do with getting a "broken" (?) connection between the video card and the motherboard soddering back together.

Hope this helps at least one of you. Good luck.
