Strange ram problem: just one socket works

Hi this is Georg from Germany, hope you can help me;)
I've got an problem with my asus p4p800 se motherboard. yesterday I removed one of my two 512mb ddr DIMMs. maybe I caused some problems because after reinstalling it the computer didn't start properly. just the fan and drives startet but there was nothing on the screen even the BIOS seemed to be dead...no beeps or something like that.
I removed the ram again and the pc did start...Now my curious problem: at this point the working RAM DIMM was installed in socket DIMM A1. later on even this didn't work anymore... I removed and installed the Ram several times and tested ervery DIMM socket on the board. Now it seemes that socket DIMM B1 is the only one working. I tested every socket and this is the only socket where the pc starts.
The actual state is:
-just socket B1 works
-just one of my two DDR DIMMs works in this socket

any other configuration causes the problem I posted above. It seems that not only the RAM is broken but also the board. am I right?

thanks for your help
Georg

Try cleaning the socket with a small clean paint brush or similar to this... then clean the memory socket-in area with an eraser, best eraser is the black area of RABBIT brand... or Mongol eraser.. Just clean that part and try again...

I hope it works.... Works most on my customers here on my shop.

Asus gives this as the board memory spec:

-4 x 184-pin DIMM Sockets support max. 4GB DDR400/333/266 non-ECC DDR SDRAM memory

I suspect you bought DDR2 type memory.

Hello my friend
First your motherboard does not support windows 7 and the maximum ram capacity is 4GB DDR400/333/266 non-ECC DDR SDRAM memory
Second you can go here and check which memory your motherboard supports

Cmos settings error system hait,

You will need access to another computer and go to: http://www.asus.com/, choose you country, then "Download", the on the next page, "Download" again. Select you "Product, Series and Model". Motherboard, Socket 478, P4P800-SE click "Search". Then choose you operating system. You will get to the page where you can download the latest BIOS, and install program. Read how to upgrade your BIOS and follow the directions carefully.

I suggest you also change the CMOS battery before you upgrade to make sure a dead battery is not the cause for the CMOS corruption.

Does ASUS P4P800 deluxe support high density memories

Here is a link to Asus' Qualified Vendor List of RAM modules for your motherboard. I do not see it mention high density RAM. You would need to search the specs on the modules recommended to be sure.

ASUS QVL

In case you don't have the manual, here is a link for it too:

ASUS P4P800 Deluxe Manual

Memory info begins on Page 2-10. Again, there is no mantion of HD modules.

Is AGP slot acepting PCI express card?

Yes, your motherboard actually does contain an AGP 8x VGA interface. (ASUS reference is at http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=12&l3=31&model=179&modelmenu=1 AND http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=12&l3=31&model=179&modelmenu=2.) This means that the video card you replace the All in Wonder with must meet that specification unless you are prepared to switch out the board.

However, as the card you have indicated above is a PCIE x16 card, that may represent additional compatibility options. (The reference for this card is here: http://ati.amd.com/products/radeonx1300/aiw2006pcie/specs.html). This is a bit confusing, given that the motherboard specs indicate an AGP 8x interface. There is the indication on the "modelmenu=2" page that the MB includes 5 PCI expansion slots, but there is no mention of any PCIE x16 interface.

It is often best to return to the site of the manufacturer, or a respected seller, to check for compatibility with the specific brand and model of your PC. This would likely be the best approach, and if you would like for me to help with that, please post back with the information.

If this information assists you in resolving the problem, please take a moment to rate the solution at a "FixYa" level. If you do not feel that you can rate at a "FixYa", please post back with more information regarding what has occurred subsequently and/or more details regarding the situation, and I will gladly help you until we have reached a definitive solution. Thank you for using and rating FixYa!
