  • Seanzy33 Feb 09, 2008

I was watching a DVD, when it was finished I put a new one in and it didn't start playing it, so I took it out and inserted again and again. It wasn't reading it, so I grabbed one of my games and did the same thing, and one of my blu-ray movies, same thing, what can I do without sending it in and losing alot of playing time.

  • Anonymous Feb 10, 2008

Yes, I too have the same problem.

We never run DVD or any other CD. We run only PS3 Games.

What could be the reason and where this can be repaired. Is there any Repair centre at Hyderabad, India

    Best Regards,

My friend put in a burned DVD the night before but was able to play a game immediately after attempting to play the burn. Later on in the evening we played the game again and it was able to read. Our problem is the following day when we attempted to play a game the PS3 doesn't read it at all. Any suggestions on how to take care of this?

My nephew has a PS3, in which after letting my sister use it, the DVD drive is not visible and will not auto-load games. The game doesn't even show up. But when you go to any application (downloaded games, life with playstation, etc) and hit the home button, the game in the dvd drive will show up and you can then play it. Being somewhat of a PC Tech, I figured someone must have hidden the dvd drive, but i can't find anything that will allow me to adjust those options. Any help on the matter would be appreciated

plays movies, bluerays but no games ..

i have downloaded games on there and she play just fine!

i deleted everything from my sony and now it still won't play games

  • Anonymous May 26, 2009

the disc is in but it dosent start straight away. and i have no manual butten to start it.

  • Boggs0009 May 11, 2010

Just to clarify, the PS3 can still play the games. It doesn't have a problem reading the discs. What happens is the game title on disc is not viewable under the Game menu.

What I have to do is open an application, such as a downloaded game, let it start, and then hit the PS home button. The title then shows up under the game menu and from that point remains viewable until the disc is ejected or the console is turned off. I then have to repeat these eteps everytime I load a game.

I think it's more of a configuration problem than a physical one.

    Has anyone else tried this?

Hi,

I had exactly the same problem. I managed to fix it by executing so called Rebuild Database operation.

I followed these instructions;

The PS3 has a special Recovery Menu, which you can access in the following way;:

1. Turn off Playstation 3.
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

The current Recovery Menu supports:
• Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION 3 System.
• Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
• Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
• Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION 3.
• Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
• System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION 3 System

Select option "Rebuild Database".

After PS3 has executed this DB rebuilding operation, the disc games will be visible again in the menu.

you have to replace the Lens you can buy compatitble replacement ps3 lens from 50-90 bucks depending where you get them from.. you can find ez guides on youtube.. Geekgirl does a video about it,,, and it well work better than the old one and read Blu ray as well.. and you should try a Lens cleaning kit, or get one and use it weekly

In some situautions your system may have simply corrupted by not turning it off properly.
1. Turn off playstation 3
2. Hold power button down and the system will on and off again
3.Once system is shutdown, re-press power button until you hear 2 beeps
4.Once you hear beeps take your finger off
5. You will be told to plug in your controller. Plug in your controller via usb and press the ps button
6. Recovery menu will pop up.
7. Select RESTORE FILE SYSTEM

This will restore your file and fix corruption to your system without any data being lost. Games will work as normal

It seems most the issues stated here are all the same as what I previously had. Its funny when Sony tells you its your TV is the reason why your PS3 can't play games. If your using an old TV the game usually does not show up. Sometimes if I leave it alone for a long time and just play the 360 or Wii for a week then plug in the PS3 it reads the games fine. My solution is if you paided 400+ for a PS3, I would have suggested getting a nice TV before getting the PS3. I had to go out and get a projector just for my Ps3 and I have not had this issue again. Online it states that it is a HD error or something wrong with the Version and it needs to be updated. I think the highest update atm is 2.5 which is on my PS3. I talked to Sony and got the response the TV is not supported by the PS3. Try putting in a DVD movie and seeing if it plays normal. If so there is nothing wrong with your PS3 its your TV that is not compatible. Try plugging it into another TV and see if this works. Every now and then after cleaning a disc it would give me a disc read error, but think the main reason it gave a generic error message was the fact my TV was lacking the capabilities to play newer games. My Projector handles it fine and for 450 bucks was well worth getting to get my Ps3 to work without issues.

It seems a lot of the people are having the same problem I had.

First off try putting a DVD into the PS3 and seeing if it starts up normal. If so the problem is simple.

If it does work that means you need a better TV.

It started for me with a simple disc read error. I looked up online about the error and it told me it was a HD malfunction or a version updated was needed. 2.5 is the newest version update I know about and already had on my PS3. I contacted Sony thinking it was going to have to go in for repair and the tech I talked to told me my TV was the issue not the PS3. Fancy that!

I thought the guy was stupid and got really pissed off because why would the TV be an issue with the PS3 reading games. It worked fine before why error out now. It was the TV that was the issue. I plugged this into a newer TV and it loaded the games fine. If you don't get the Disc Read error and the disc reading icon is gone from the Top right corner, it did load the game fine, just that the TV can not handle the icon. Sounds stupid but its the issue. I went out and bought a projector for 450 bucks and have not had to send in my PS3 for any type of repair. If your having this issue and you have had your TV longer than the PS3 was released chances are your starting to notice your TV slip.

Try testing it on a Newer TV that supports HD and it will show the game without issues. If you don't have an HD TV just try it on one that came out after the PS3 was released.

The laser goes bad on the Playstation 3 more than any other console I see in my store. I would suggest that you call your local game stores to see if they do console repairs. If not send it in to Sony or buy the laser (most likely from China) and install your self. It's actually fairly easy to install it.

Hi Granite90 - I had that exact problem on Jan 6th - so i dont know why it says you posted on jan 30th...todays the 8th..anyways here goes..

I was playing my ps3 on the weekend with no problems - playing dead space and everything was fine. On tuesday a friend came over after skipping work - and we couldnt get any game to start on the ps3. The auto start feature was on so the game should start automatically - it didnt. When we removed the game put it back in the system, turned off the ps3 and powered it back on there was no change. We played games that were downloaded from the PS store, but there was a problem there too. If we pressed the PS button - to leave the game temporarily, the system would continue to try to load the icons but they would never load....this was odd,so we pressed the PS button to go back into the game - but now the screen would be faded black - and the game would continue but we could not actually play?! SO I decided to exit the game - held the PS button down and selected Quit game - bad idea - not it attempted to quit and was frozen on a black screeen.....nothing happened..after many attempts - it was obvious that the PS3 could not load BLU-Ray discs....hence no ps3 games...

Next I decided to take out a lens cleaner - one that would spin inside the ps3 and clean off the lens....i did this many times - maybe 10 or 12....and finally i restarted the ps3////

after many restarts - the PS3 eventually started up with a loading bar - it stated that the hard drie was corrupt and the files and database would be rebuilt.....after it re-installed these components - by PS3 was back in working condition...

I did not lose any game saves file or anything on the system - the hard driev was corrupt - and it was repaired although I dont know how the Ps3 finally realized it was not functioning properly....hope this helps dudes - i know how frustrating it can be - took me 3 hours to fix - eventually it fixed itself....

Ok go out and get a cd cleaner.
Should take care of it IF ITS DUST>
It costs 7-10$ and if it fixes your issue then you save a bunch!
If not you will need to make sure Sony's warrenty is not valid and its not if you dont have the recipet.
You can take it apart and instal a new blu ray unit or send it to sony for 150$ plus s&h.
I have blu ray parts if you need them.

SOURCE: My PS3 plays PS2 games fine, but freezes up when

The issue is the Blu-Ray diode. If one disc stops working 100% of the time but the other two types still work (DVD and CD) then the blu-ray diode died. The good news is that a handy person can fix it for about $45. Just do your research and watch a few youtube videos on replacing the laser and opening the case to make sure you are comfortable. I just did it and it was fine. You can buy the laser assembly on eBay, just make sure you go local and get a warranty. Don't buy overseas.

Playing MLB the Show on PS3. Game loads fine, franchise I've been playing loads fine. But once I try to play a game, bar starts as game loads then game cuts off and goes to main PS3 screen.

Is your CD dirty or does it have any cracks? It might just be the problem. Otherwise, it could be corrupt game data. Clean the disc, if it still doesn't work I'd try deleting the game utility data and re-downloading it. Hope this helps in some way or another.

I thought playstations are all formated to play any made of equal or lesser p.s. value such as p.s.3. should play p.s.2. games

I believe you're asking about backwards compatibility. While I agree a PS3 should be able to play PS2 games, it's sadly not always the case. While they all can play PS1 games, not every PS3 can play PS2 games. PS2 compatibility depends on the model.

Backwards compatibility with PS2 games has slowly been phased out. The original PS3's had hardware emulation (quite literally there is a PS2 inside of your PS3). The later revisions had software emulation only (PS3 processor pretends to be the PS2 processor), and then none at all. No slim PS3 has backwards compatibility.

Hardware emulation:
20 GB PS3 Fat/Original - Model CECHB01
60 GB PS3 Fat/Original - Model CECHA01

Software emulation:
80 GB PS3 Fat/Original - Model CECHE01

In my personal experience, there's no real difference between software and hardware emulation in terms of actual game play. Software emulation has a few hang-ups on some older games, but overall it works pretty well. And it's infinitely better than not having any ability to play PS2 games at all.

Hope that helps!

Can a PAL Game be Played on Japanese (NTSC) PS3 console?

No. All PS3s are region locked. The PS3 will play games that matches its programmed region.

Since you have a Japanese (NTSC) PS3, it only plays Japanese (NTSC) games

That PAL game you have will only work on a PAL PS3.

if you can't play bluray movies then your bluray laser is broken. you will still be able to play games, because there are two different lasers.

How much free memory does your Ps3 have? Are the games used or scratched?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You need a certain amount of memory to play ps3 games. Scratched up games can't be read.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Did you put the disc on the right side? Lay the ps3 down and the ps3 game disc picture should be facing up.
