Question about Samsung PCN5425R 54" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Samsung Rear Projection screen went out.

In June 2007 You helped me fix my Samsung PCN5425R Rear projection TV. I had a convergence board problem and it fixed the TV. . Tonight my TV just went out. My daughter was watching it and she said that the picture just went out and you can see a faint blue color in the middle of the screen. It than powers off and than back on and continues to keep doing this. I unplugged the TV and came back to this site and read somewhere to leave it unplugged for 4 hours. So I am going to see what happens after four hours but I am not to optimistic. These TV's seem to have major maintenance issues. I sure hope you guys can help me fix one of them at least. Cant afford to buy a new TV right now.

Thank You premtech for the quick response.

Well I cannot remember where I purchased them I am researching now to see. What I purchased was new convergance boards. They were about $180.00 and I installed it myself. Seemed pretty simple. Just a couple screws and plugs and the board was in. Than went through convergance alignment on screen and it was done. What do you mean by heat sink? Also I dont remember my TV acting like this before. When it went out originally in June I still had a picture it just was very distorted and wavey. This time the TV picture just was there and than all of the sudden it was like it powered off and all there was, was a faint blue like cloud in the center of the screen. I was able to access the menu to try and correct convergance when it went out the first time. This time I dont have anything. I cannot access any menus The service manual for it the unit shows to enter service mode power off-press mute- 1 - 8 - 2 - than power. I cannot access this hidden menu either. Could thios be the same problem just different symptoms? I am picking up an identical unit from my brother that had the same issue and he bought a new board for it but it didnt repair it. Has been sitting since June. Hopefully with help I can make one good one with both units.

this is what I purchased from Samsung BP95-00142E Convergence Board. Not sure if the part is factory or chineese knock-off. Price has dropped significantly. Coould I need to replace this whole unit again?

    Thanks premtech,

Well let me update you where we are now. I unplugged the +/-24 volt line and no change. However I got my brothers TV which is exact same unit. I have it sitting next to my TV so I can hopefully compare the two and make one. When I changed the convergence board in June which was suggested from here it fixed my TV and all was happy. My brothers TV did the same thing so I ordered a board for him. When I put in the new board it didnt work so we assumed it was something different. It wasnt a big issue for him because he travels alot and has multiple units so we just left it in the other room. Today after trying your suggestion on mine with no results I tried unplugging the +/-24 volt line on his and the unit powered right up with good audio it however had very wavy colored lines like my original problem in June. Therefore the board they sent me was either bad or I damaged it during installation. I than took his new board out and put it in mine to try and see if it would power up with the volt line un-plugged. It did not work either. It sometimes makes a funny whining sound at the bottom right where the power comes in and near this item that looks like some kind of coil and has a red cable going up to another unit mounted to the right of the convergence board.

I really screwed up cause I thought well maybe my convergence board is still good so I will put it in my brothers unit and see it I can make his work. When I was unplugging the cables from it the plug for the red became loose on the board and now it wiggles very loose and looks like the contact is broken. However I continued to put it in the TV and this time left the +/-24 volt line plugged in and the TV powered up with picture and sound. Except the colors are wavy and I cannoth adjust the convergence because I believe the red plug is loose and not making contact. I guess I can try to solder the plug back down to the board or just replace it. But back to my TV when we try to power it up it still just has the faint blue color in the center of the screen. The red timer light on the front blinks and it powers off and on by itself. You have been right on the money with this so far and I am hoping you have another suggestion that will get me back up and running.

  • Jeff Peabody Feb 01, 2008

Well it's not like I am determined to avoid the professional, its just unfortunate timing and finances are tight right now. And the TV's are EXACT models we bought them together same day. His TV did fire up WITH picture after unplugging the +/-24 line it just had a picture that had the color all wavy and distorted. And yes it is the foil side of the connection that I damaged. I was told by that the BP95-00142E board is a factory Samsung part. I would think that for $79.00 a new board would be less money than having to buy parts and than have them put on the board. But I could be wrong. I am convinced that for my brothers TV it is a bad board that I bought and a new board or a repaired board should do the trick. But with my TV it appears that it must be something more serious? Harder to diagnose?

  • Jeff Peabody Feb 09, 2008

    thanks premtech,

I am goping to get my brothers unit fixed first by reolacing that board that fixed mine. The one they shipped me must have been defective but I waited to long to deal with it. This time I wont. It should work just fine by replacing this. I will let you know when I am ready to roll up my sleeves and tackle mine.

I purchased a new convergance board. I installed it but when I go to menu and try and align the cross hairs in convergance set up they dont move when I am using ch up, ch down, vol+, vol- they will switch to different crosshairs using 2,4,6,8

I was letting the TV warm up for approx. 30 min and than the TV began powering off by itself. I would power it on and it would go off before a minute

Where did you purchase the convergence amps previously? Your set takes two STK392-040 Sanyo amps and there is a high probability that that is the problem here again. The convergence amps for these units are really critical and chinese knock-offs are abundant. Is it possible that you didn't get Sanyo originals?
Another thought is what about the heat sink used when they were installed? Did you do the installation or have it done professionally?

I doubt seriously that unplugging the unit will have any affect.

Well it wouldn't be my first choice to replace the whole unit - just the amps and a couple resistors should do the trick...

But let's see if that's indeed the problem.. With the back off look for the wire lead on the left side of the convergence module and unplug it. This is the +/-24 volt line to the amps. After unplugging it try turning on the Tv. If it comes on and you have good audio that is a clear indication the amps are toast..

Wow - - never seen someone so determined to avoid the professional.. And with the little transfer thing you did there, unless they were EXACT models you stood a good chance of damaging both units even further...

That said, it sounds as though you may have simply damaged the foil side connection as you guessed, but it's really difficult not seeing it to say for certain...

Your TV won't fire with his convergence board, right?? If so, then we have something else we need to look at as the root cause on your unit. If his fires-up without picture after unplugging the +/- 24v line then it's likely the convergence board (amps and resistors) causing the problem. I would strongly suggest not buying these tiger direct/Ma&Pa's electronics store rejects for a fix. Buy from say Vance Baldwin, or Tritronics and to save a few bucks send it in to a reputable shop and simply have it rebuilt with genuine Sanyo amps...

With your brother's unit simply remove the convergence module and see if resoldering the 24v line is all that's needed... Inspect closely to make sure there are not some other minor cracks in the board...

As for yours I think we need to be looking at the delfection board and possibly the HOT (horizontal output transistor) and/or the regulator circuit but you may need some test equipment here. How are you fixed for a DMM or scope. You will need to make some static tests of the various components in the HOT circuit, including a continuity test on the HOT itself between E-B-C to check for shorts. Is any of this sounding like a bit too much?

If so the other thing you could do is simply have the board sent in for bench testing and repair. PTS is very reputable and fairly inexpensive. If not, roll up your sleeves and let me know...

I have a Samsung Model PCN5425R Rear Projection TV. When I try to set the convergence, the red will not move whatever I do, but the blue works fine.

If it is rear projection set it uses either two of the STK-392-020 OR STK-392-040 CHIPS FOR CONVERGENCE OUTPUT.

BOTH WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED; NOTE THAT THESE SETS ALSO HAVE "PICO" FUSES ON THE BOARD FOR EACH CHIP--no movement means one of the fuses is blown because the chip shorted.

This can be a do it yourself repair if you are handy; total parts cost if the parts purchased on Ebay is under 30 dollars.

Let me know if I can assist you and if you have any questions reply to the posting here.

Your convergence ic’s have failed, this is a common problem with most all projection tv’s, the repair is involved. I suggest in your case calling a local repair shop.

Disconnect the convergence board and see if the set comes back on. If it does, replace the convergence board or the STK392-040 Convergence Amp IC's. Good Luck

Convergence: concave picture with double image

An easy replacement on the Samsubgs is to replace the convergence board. If you are doing this yourself it is just a plug in board. Here is a link for the part number and how to purchase it.
